Considerations and Support
Diversity and Inclusiveness in Our Online Class
It is my goal that all students in this course feel they are engaging in an environment in which they can comfortably and productively learn. Throughout this semester, you will be asked to share your writing with others by participating in class discussions and hopefully also virtual study groups. I ask that you engage in dialogue with an open mind, in the effort to share knowledge and create a space of mutual understanding that includes openness and sensitivity to a diversity of voices and ideas. To that end, I want to be explicit that diversity of background (including, but not limited to: race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, socioeconomic status, religion, ability) is an asset to all of us. Diversity of voices, of minds, strengthens our ability to read, write and answer questions about the world we all inhabit. If your learning is adversely affected by experiences in or outside of our class, please let me know.
Students with Disabilities
Disability Services and Programs for Students (DSPS) coordinates all academic accommodations for students with documented disabilities at Santa Barbara City College. If you have or think you might have a disability that impacts your educational experience in this class, contact DSPS to determine your eligibility for accommodations.
During the campus closure, DSPS can be reached by phone or email. The phone number is (805) 730-4164 or send an email to dspshelp@sbcc.edu.
If you have already registered with DSPS, please submit your accommodation requests via the ‘DSPS Online Services Student Portal’ as soon as possible. This needs to be done each semester. If you have any questions or concerns about your accommodations, make an appointment with a DSPS Counselor.
Please complete this process in a timely manner to allow adequate time to provide accommodations.
Any student who has difficulty affording groceries or accessing sufficient food to eat every day, who lacks a safe and stable place to live and believes this may affect their performance in the course is urged to contact me if you are comfortable in doing so. This will enable me to direct you toward helpful resources in addition to the information posted below.
SBCC frequently runs food distribution events; information about these events are emailed to all students, faculty, and staff. Keep an eye out for the email if you are interested. The Santa Barbara County Food Bank provides information about their full food distribution schedule here.
