A Note From the Teacher (6th Grade)
Hello,
My name is Caleb Wright. I am excited to begin my first year teaching middle school English. I am a recent graduate of North Greenville University, where I received a Bachelor of Christian Studies with honors. Literature has been a passion of mine from the fifth grade onwards. I hope to foster the joy of reading in my students in the same way many great teachers have in my own life.
In sixth grade, we will cover a wide variety of books, poems, speeches, and more. My hope is that these works will spark students' creativity and critical thinking. Many of the books at this grade level have a sense of adventure or longing to explore within them; from the goodhearted thief, Robin Hood, to the letters of Rifka, a young girl writing back to Russia with stories of her difficult trip towards America. This is why you will see this on the sixth grade table:
“There is no frigate like a book
To take us lands away,
Nor any coursers like a page
Of prancing poetry.”
This is an excerpt from a poem by Emily Dickson, included in the first volume of Realms of Gold, one of the works we will read from in class. I hope this quote rings true to the students this year, that their creativity, when fueled by the books we read, will take them to far off lands they have not yet explored.
