Shine Bright Like A Diamond
Soap Mold Project
Soap Mold Project
We'll be 3D printing a soap mold to make a piece of soap for a loved one. The soap mold will feature a meaningful and creative design. Then, we'll give them the soap on Valentine's day!
Brainstorm: I decided to make a piece of soap for my sister, whose birthday is right on Valentine's day. After deliberating, I decided to make a mold of a gymnast, because my sister does gymnastics. I also wanted to add the words "Shine bright like a diamond" because my sister loves that song. To add all the images that I needed, I decided to make my mold in Fusion 360.
This is the image I used as my model.
I traced the image, but I changed it a little so that the gymnast would fit onto the mold.
Procedure: To begin, I went onto Google and found a picture of a gymnast that I liked. Then, I uploaded that picture into Fusion 360 and traced it using the Fit Point Spline tool. Later, I did the same with the words "Shine Bright Like A Diamond", although I chose to use the shape of a diamond rather than the actual word. Then, I created the circular base and moved my sketches onto it. After extruding it all and making a few edits, I sent it to the 3D printer.
This is my first prototype. I traced an image of a gymnast from the internet and added the lyrics I needed as well.
This is the version I printed. I edited it a little to make the words bigger and the gymnast's ball rounder.
This is the first prototype I printed out. It looked pretty good, but there were still a few things to fix! Ms. Tran gave me some advice, suggesting that I make the gymnast bigger and the words lower. After making these edits, I sent my soap mold to the printer once more.
I printed out my final version and used silicon plastic to make a mold.
My original mold ended up having a few holes, so I had to patch them up using a differrent kind of mold.
I poured in the soap after fixing the holes! I decided to make my soap vanilla scented, and I also added a drop of red food coloring.
The final result!
SOUL Reflections:
S - One of my strengths for this project was my gymnast. I tried to trace the image of the gymnast very carefully, so I'm pretty proud of it. I also like how her ball turned out; in the beginning, I wanted to trace the ball in the image, but when that didn't work out, I uploaded a circle in Fusion 360. That looked much neater and prettier. All in all, I'm very proud of how my gymnast turned out.
O - In this project, I got the opportunity to explore Fusion 360 further, which definitely gave me more knowledge of the app. I learned to use several different tools by watching Ms. Tran work, so I think my Fusion 360 skills have definitely leveled up.
U - This project gave me an understanding of how working fast is important (especially with silicon plastic), but also how to pay attention to details and alter one part of a project without changing anything else. These skills definitely would have come in handy when I was CADding my project.
L - One of my limitations was that I accidentally made my mold a bit too big, so I needed to use more silicon plastic, and that slowed down my process. I was also delayed by the amount of holes in my first mold.
WISCR:
W -
I - The soap made in this mold was a gift for my sister, so when cadding, I needed to think insightfully to come up with a design she'd like.
S -
C - I needed help from Ms. Tran a few times throughout this project, and I needed to be a clear communicator so that she could help me properly, which she did. I really appreciate her help throughout my process.
