Project Description:
Our project was to create a soap bar for someone we know, and along with it a phrase relating to the soap bar. We had to make our soap bar 3 inches in diameter and 1 to 1.5 inches in height. We were allowed to us Fusion 360 and TinkerCad code-blocks. The design must be original and not be taken from pre-made designs by others.
Brainstorming:
I decided to create the soap bar for my brother, and I chose to create a design of a cricket field on it because he likes the sport. I brainstormed sketches for the project on Notability. My original idea was simply a cricket player hitting a ball. To add more details, however, I added a stadium wall in the back, as well as a pitch. I wanted to add detail, but not too much as to not clutter the soap bar. For the quote, I wrote, "You're a 6'r
This is my first brainstorm.
Prototyping:
On my first prototype, I drew in all the details, and gave each feature a different height so they stood out from the other features. I also gave it a much shorter height than required, as it was a prototype, and my main objective was to see whether the details came out.
The details came out well and distinctly so I continued on to the final product. I added the quote to the side of the soap bar using the offset and cut tools. However, since the side was a curve, there was a big cut in one part and a smaller one in another. I allowed that to happen, then using the extrude tool, cut off the extra part of the cut. I also increased the height from the first prototype.
However, when the print came off, I tried removing the supports and it left a lot of debris inside the text, which would not be good for molding. I moved the text to the top of the design in some blank space and reprinted. In the middle of the print, I decided to add a little more size to the text, to make it a little more distinct. However, it didn't print for some reason, so I reprinted it the next class.
Mold Making Process:
I pressed the silicone onto the plastic piece and it came out pretty well. We mixed different colored silicones to make the mixture. Once it dried, I added the soap mixture to the mold.
This is the silicone mold's final outcome, which came out pretty well with accurate details.
This is the final soap bar. I was surprised that it was able to capture the text that well.
Reflections:
Strength: I think I utilized my skills learned from DE8 pretty efficiently here, as well as extra tools I learned this semester.
Opportunity: I think that I worked pretty efficiently and if given the opportunity to add extra, would just add a few more details.
Understanding: I think that I learned a lot about incorporating art into a limited space for a modeling project.
Limitations: I think that the biggest limitation for me was the size limit of the soap. With more space, I might have added more detail.
WISCR Reflection: I think that I met the W and S in WISCR. I feel that I got W (Well Rounded) for my ability to use my Fusion 360 skills with art. I feel that I got the S (Self Motivated), because even when I had issues with my prototype and my print didn't come out, I still pushed through.
