Description: In a group of 4 or 5, build the tallest structure that is sturdy and stays up for at least 1 minute. The structure is built solely on straws and 2 ft of masking tape. It must stand alone, and the only thing that it touches is the floor.
Brainstorm: Our group had a variety of ideas. They were:
1) Create a sturdy multiple cubes and stack them on top of each other to create the structure
2) Create a large, square base. From there, build onto it in a pyramid like fashion
3) When creating the edges of the structure, we had the idea that we wouldn't have to use too much tape because we could fold the edge of a straw and insert it in another for them to stay together. We added a bit of tape for them, though, because other wise the edges would have collapsed.
4) Create a big base. Then, add a long, thin stick composed of straws stacked one on top of another. Add supports along the stick that touch the floor, so the stick wouldn't wobble and fall.
Procedure: We decided on using the 4th option on our Brainstorm List. We started by creating a U shaped base. We created a triangle on one of the edges of our base. Then we added a long stick to the traiangle. To the stick, we added a support that connect to the ground. From there, we repeated the same process of adding sticks and supports until we got to a point where the structure becaume to heavy at the top.
SOUL Reflection:Â
Strength: We did well as a team
Opportunity: We should have aded a long, wide base at the top of our structure(with supports). That would have helped us build it more.
Understanding: I think that as a group we understood each other pretty well.
Limitation: We had only two feet of tape. This made sure that we were resourceful with it. We also only had 30 minutes, which was another restriction.
WISCR Reflection:
I think that we met the I, S, and R parts of WISCR. I think that we could have been a bit more clear with our communication with each other.
