Why summer reading?

We know that reading throughout the summer is important. 

• Summer reading encourages students to develop lifelong reading habits.

• Students can apply skills learned throughout the year to new reading materials. 

• Summer is a great time for students to explore and develop individual interests through reading.

• Summer reading can foster a love of reading for enjoyment. 

What is the PRHS Summer Reading Program?

All students entering Grades 9-12 at PRHS are asked to read throughout the summer. 

The number of books that are required depends on the class students will be taking in the fall. Honors English 9-12 classes are asked to read two books. English 9-12 classes read one book. Students who take AP-level classes will receive their summer reading assignments from their teachers. 

The PRHS Summer Reading Program is based on choice.

Students may choose from the suggested grade-level book lists on this website or from The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) booklists and award-winners. 

Choosing Books

Students and parents should make sure that summer reading books are:

• Books that the student has not yet read

• Appropriate for the student's grade level and independent reading level

• Texts that students will not see in the school-year curriculum of any course

Summer Reading Assessment

When students return to school in the fall, they should expect to complete an assessment based on their summer reading. Teachers will communicate the requirements of the assessment at the beginning of the school year. You can learn more about summer reading assessments by clicking here.
