The Rambling Reader

Quarter 3 2023

See what is new at the Dr. Stephen J. Storkel Learning Center, including:

Library Promotions and Displays

We celebrated the current and past winners and nominees for the Youth Media Awards. We had the live stream of the awards ceremony on January 30th. We have many of the Printz , Morris, YALSA Nonfiction, Coretta Scott King, Pura Belpre, Sydney Taylor and others on display.

Blind date with a book: The month of February we invited students to not judge a book by its cover. Using a description of the ideal reader's likes and dislikes, students could check out a book to see if they might make a connection.

The month of March we held a scavenger hunt promotion to help students get reaquainted with our catalog and organization.

Black History Month Notable Authors & Books

For Black History Month we showcased the contributions of Black authors and rotated books by genre to display at the tables focusing on science fiction, historical fiction, romance, poetry and more!

In the month of March we've been celebrating the contributions of prominent historical and contemporary women authors and biographies /autobiographies of famous women. You can see some of the selections at each table in the library!

Library Statistics and Class Overview

Study hall visits for quarter 3: We continue to be a popular space for students to visit during study hall. This quarter we had 6,276 student walk-in visits from their study hall, and had 2179 circulations.

We also manage the space for class projects and research and we had over 292 class periods scheduled in quarter 2.

Among the classes that visited the library, we collaborated on projects for English debate research, projects focused on the Civil War, Cold War and Career Research and Digital Citizenship.

Mr. Rentler's Cold War Museum exhibit research projects in progress.

Northern Tier Library Cards and Makerspace Club Collaboration

Pine-Richland High School shares the room with Northern Tier Library to run the Pine Center branch after school Mondays-Thursday from 3-5:30 pm.

The staff at Northern Tier have been a huge help in managing the room after school and assisting with our child development preschool program by sharing their children's book collection for weekly checkouts.

Our Makerspace club continues its collaboration with Pine-Center's Maker program. See the pictures below of some of the recent Makerspace club meetings.

Resources in Focus

For students: Exploring a career path? The library offers many resources for exploring different careers. Ferguson's Career Center offers in-depth information on workforce descriptions, salary ranges, employment prospects, and more. We also offer many career information links via PowerLibrary's PA Job Resources for workforce statistics and resume-building focused on PA.

For teachers: Our professional ebook collection through MackinVia was updated in February with many more titles. These would make a great resource for differentiated supervision.

You can access this by logging into mackinvia (pinerichland.mackinvia.com) with your Pine-Richland google email account and clicking on the backpack icon and selecting "Pine-Richland Professional" as your location. (See the screenshots below.)

You can browse some of the library resources available for your department at this link from my library google site as well.
