The Remix Challenge - The RAD Plant Waterer (Radial Absorbant Device)
By Ashwin C, Gabriel , and Adam T
For the Remix Challenge we were given the task of using the disk and transforming it into an object for everyday use. Our product not only accomplishes that goal, but also revolutionizes the plant growing industry.
Often, plants die because they are not given enough water or their owner forgets to water them. But our RAD Plant Waterer effaces this problem from society. Our state-of-the-art technology allows the user to easily water their plant from the soil, where their roots are. And they do not have to circulate the water, or worry about watering it nicely throughout the day. All they have to do is pour the amount of water they want the plant to absorb throughout the day in the morning into the funnel. It will then circulate around the plant, and will slowly be absorbed into the soil through the day. The soil will act as a barrier so that all of the water does not rush into the plant at once, however over the course of a day, it will absorb as much water as it needs.
At our initial brainstorm, we had an idea for a funnel at the top, which went down onto a cone. The water would flow down the outside of the cone onto a hollowed out version of the remix device, and would then go into the soil. Then we realized, with that idea, there would be nowhere for the plant to grow.
For the second iteration, we kept the funnel, and the hollowed out Remix, but we moved the funnel over to the side, and we connected it using a bridge resembling a halfpipe. This was perfect because they could put water on it, it would circulate all around, and it would not get in the way of the plant at all.
Additionally, we knew there would not be enough space in our 3d print design for all the soil necessary. So we meticulously engineered the RAD Plant Waterer and it fit perfectly into this bowl.
For use of the product, it would be easiest to grow the plant/flower from a seed, however with care and precision it is possible to put any small-sized plant or flower into this brilliant device. Above is a picture of the plant when we first put it in the RAD Plant Waterer. Below, a picture a couple months later.
As you can see, the picture speaks for itself. The RAD Plant Waterer made a significant impact on the health and growth of the plant. It’s easily watered all the way around, and it flourishes inside a classroom on our teacher’s desk, simply because of the effectiveness of the waterer.
