This full year foundation course is for students who have an interest in creating art using a variety of materials. Students will explore different mediums and techniques including drawing, painting, collage and sculpting. Arts and Culture from around the world are introduced and incorporated into project work.
In this full year foundation course, students will gain an introductory understanding of the fundamental aspects of digital art making. Using the computer as a tool, students will create a wide variety of projects using Adobe Photoshop for image manipulation and Illustrator for drawing and painting. Students will apply their knowledge of the elements and principles of design in order to strengthen their ability to visually communicate ideas.
Where art meets function. This full year foundation course focuses on the communication of ideas and creation of 3 dimensional artwork with a purpose. Students will work with diverse media, such as clay, fiber arts, paper and metal to create handmade books, crocheted hats and scarves and a variety of charms and jewelry. Branding and marketing strategies will also be explored.
This full year course is for students interested in working with clay. Students in this course will utilize a variety of hand building techniques, decoration methods and glazing techniques. This course allows students to gain skills in construction and sculpting of clay while utilizing a variety of tools and materials. Ceramics students will create both functional and decorative sculptures.
In this course, the elements and principles of 3D design are studied and utilized to create art that exists in three dimensions. Various artists, genres & materials will be explored, including clay, metal, plaster, wire and more. The sculptural processes of assemblage, reduction, carving and modeling will be used to create both small and large sculptures based on a theme or concept. The ability to execute original solutions to design problems will require basic drawing skills, creative thinking and artistic exploration of possible approaches.
This full year course explores a variety of drawing and painting techniques. It includes an in depth study of drawing materials such as: charcoal, pencil, colored pencil and pastel. Painting mediums include tempera, watercolor, and acrylics. This course is designed to assist students in gaining skills which are necessary in the creation of portfolio pieces. Development of individual style is encouraged.
This course is an introduction to the world of animation. Traditional animation techniques will be explored including comic, storyboard, flipbook, cell and stop motion. This course also focuses on the creation of two dimensional animated movies using Adobe Animate, Photoshop. There is an emphasis on character development, storytelling, creation of environment and composition. Students will develop their drawing skills and be introduced to digital animation.
This course is for students interested in learning about the art of digital photography. Students begin the year exploring introductory techniques used to create and manipulate photographs in a traditional darkroom then work digitally in Adobe Photoshop for the remainder of the year. The course covers the basics of using a Digital Single Lens Reflex camera along with technical and aesthetic principles. Emphasis is placed on photography as an art form. Portraiture and studio lighting are explored and artistic expression and development of conceptual ideas are stressed. Students may use their own DSLR camera but loaner cameras are available.
Students may take this course for 3-6 college credits through SUNY Sullivan.
In this year-long intermediate course, students will learn to use the computer to visually problem solve and communicate their ideas through the thoughtful integration of type, text, still and moving imagery. Through the design process, students will improve their methods of composition and sharpen their creative thinking skills. Students will continue to build competency in Photoshop and Illustrator through the creation of graphic and advertising and Adobe Flash and ActionScript 3.0 will be used to design and code original video games which engage users and captivate the imagination.
This full year course is for students who want to build a portfolio or plan to attend college and major/ minor in art. Students take the Advanced Placement exam which is performance based. AP students develop a portfolio of artwork that meets the requirements of college portfolios. Areas of focus may include any course of study offered through the art program such as drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, animation, or any computer art. Students will need to work outside the classroom and maintain a sketchbook. Students should complete at least 2, Level II Accomplished art courses to participate. There is a cost for students.
The Art Academy affords HS students the opportunity to earn 1 elective art credit, over a 3 week period, during the summer. In this project based course, students will explore various artmaking techniques that are not possible during the regular school year. The curriculum changes yearly so students may repeat for credit.
