Integers

Integers

Students begin learning about integers in sixth grade. They start with understanding integers on a number line and absolute value. In seventh grade they begin operations with integers. It is important that students don't just memorize rules, but really understand what happens when you add, subtract, multiply and divide positive and negative numbers. They also need to have a strong understanding of inverse and how to combine integers to make zero. This helps them really understand what happens when solving equations. Students will need to use counters and number lines to fully understand integers before moving to just seeing them as numbers.
