When New York went into lockdown last March, I started walking daily to relieve my anxiety and cabin fever. Being sedentary by nature, I tricked myself into enjoying these outings by turning them into opportunities to make visual
observations. When the weather warmed, I started walking the shoreline and beachcombing. Afterwards as I sorted my findings, a natural rhythm emerged, as if coming from the ocean itself. I mounted sets of things on black velvet display boards, giving the objects the formality of precious gems.
We try to make sense out of things by accumulating, sorting and preserving. I have always been an accumulator. I collect objects and arrange them into still lifes for the camera. I post a daily still life on my vickiragan Instagram site and more at www.lightzone.org.
