What is Media Literacy?
In today's digital world, it is more important than ever for people to be able to determine a source's validity and reliability. When it comes to media, the topic of "fake news" has been mentioned more often due to the easy manner in which news can be created, reproduced, edited, and distributed through social media and other online venues. We must go beyond grouping information into one melting pot. There are specific types of fake news.
As consumers of media and information, we need to work to become more aware of the resources we use - where they come from, who produced/wrote them, why they were created, and for whom they were produced/written.
What does Media Literacy education do for us? Media Literacy education teaches students to apply critical thinking to media messages and to use media to create their own messages – it is a key 21st century skill. Media Literacy is critical to the health and well-being of America’s children, as well as to their future participation in the civic and economic life of our democracy
