Driving Innovation is a School District of Pickens County district initiative designed to expand access to innovative learning experiences while building the capacity of educators to sustain purposeful innovation within their schools. Through the Mobile Learning Lab and Tool Reservation Program, educators gain the tools, resources, and experiences needed to transform instructional goals into meaningful learning.

Students have been able to explore STEM though tools like Sphero Indi & Bolt, Ozobots, ClassVR & Prisms, 3D printers, and Breakout EDU. This year we are scaling access to STEM Resources through our iTECH program allowing teachers to reserve tools for activities in the classroom. These hands-on experiences continue to spark curiousity, build problem-solving skills, and help students see themselves in STEM careers!

In the second quarter, we were able to serve 980 students at 7 of our elementary schools! Students have used Indi Cars, Sphero Bolt, Cubelets and book Creator during our lessons. Be on the look out next semester as our Learning Lab adds on a new focus area- Creation! Through our partnership with the Cilffs Communiity Outreach organization, the bus will be providing creation-based lessons using 3-D printing and a Glowforge! We are already excited to kick-off the new semester with new lessons, tools, and learning to come!

We're excited to share with you that we have already been able to hit the road in the mobile learning lab this school year! The SDPC Carpentry Team did a beautiful job on the interior of the vehicle, and we were able to use district funds to purchase brand new tires.

In the first quarter, we were able to serve over 1,800 students in 26 classrooms at 5 of our elementary schools! Students have used Indi Cars, Sphero Bolt, Cubelets and Stop Motion Animation during lessons, and we are very excited about upcoming events!!

Great Progress! Our partnership with CU has been excellent as they helped us design and acquire a brand-new wrap for the vehicle adding the SDPC Logo and branding alongside those of our valued partners. Though we had hoped it would be ready to showcase at the Vineyards event, it is rewarding to see how our design has come to life. We can't wait to show this off to our students and teachers when they return!

Currently, the district Carpentry Team is working on the interior of the vehicle, and we are excited to see the results. Next steps include outfitting the vehicle with an awning and a generator to support our electrical needs. If anyone has expertise or contacts in this area, please share!!

The vehicle pictured in the proposal below comes with a substantial price tag and a lengthy timeline of two years, so we have modified our plans to help us get on the road to innovation sooner rather than later!

We are currently working with Clemson University on a mutually beneficial collaboration. This would allow us to acquire a less expensive STEM vehicle and create an opportunity for Clemson Engineering students to work with and learn alongside our students in SDPC.

While we work on the details and planning for this project, our Instructional Technology team has already purchased several engaging STEM kits for elementary learners. The team is able to hit the road with a wagon to deliver engaging instruction one classroom at a time.
