Students Should Expect Delayed Financial Aid Offer Letters
There are two big announcements that will impact the 2024-25 FAFSA:
First, the bad news: The US Department of Education announced that colleges and universities will receive FAFSA applicant data (called ISIR files) beginning in the first half of March, up to six weeks later than the expected January 31 date. This means that colleges cannot process financial aid packages until late March at the earliest. Students will likely not receive financial aid offer letters until April or later.
There is some good news: The US Department of Education (ED) also announced that it will update the supporting data tables used in the Student Aid Index (SAI) calculation to account for inflation, giving students access to an additional $1.8 billion in need-based federal student aid. The data files sent to colleges and universities in March will be based on the updated tables.
What does this mean for students?
The delay in sending data to colleges means that colleges and universities will be unable to finalize financial aid offer letters until late March, or, more likely, April at the earliest.
Students will likely not be able to make a college decision by “Decision Day”; many schools typically celebrate student postsecondary decisions in early May.
Students who need to make corrections to their FAFSAs will be able to do so once the data files are sent in March.
The updated SAI tables will mean more funding for more students, so there is at least some good news amidst the delays.
Troubleshooting Tips
Running into challenges as you’re assisting students with the FAFSA form?
Learn more about the common challenges we’re seeing in FAFSA completion and suggested workarounds.
If you are planning to attend college during the 2024-2025 school year, the FAFSA is the key to financial aid. Whether you are a new student or returning student, attending a trade school or four year university, the FAFSA is for you.
The FAFSA is the first step in financial aid. It is used to determine your eligibility for federal grants and loans like the Pell grant, as well as the Access Missouri state grant. Colleges use it to determine eligibility for need-based financial aid, as do some scholarships and interest-free loan programs.
The 2024-2025 FAFSA form is still in a soft launch. Encourage students to be patient. Encourage students to reach out to Federal Student Aid if they are having difficulty completing the form.
Make sure students complete the FAFSA at StudentAid.gov. This is the official site for the U.S. Department of Education.
If your students have not yet created an FSA ID, have them do that first. It will take a few days for that to process. Returning students and parents can use their existing FSA ID.
Visit MOFAFSA.org for a list of documents students will need to complete the FAFSA.
Important:
Have students check with their anticipated college or university’s financial aid office to learn of their FAFSA completion deadline. Some institutions have a deadline as early as February 1.
Missouri Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development has extended the FAFSA filing deadline for the Access Missouri Grant Program to April 1.
