Dr. Sonia Vega-López is a Professor of Nutrition and Assistant Dean of Inclusive Excellence at the College of Health Solutions, Arizona State University. She is a bilingual and bicultural community and public health nutrition researcher. Her research involves translating nutrition research into culturally-appropriate behavioral interventions for diet improvement and chronic disease prevention among Hispanic families. Her current work goes beyond the individual-level focus and has expanded to involve multi-level and multi-domain factors to (1) study how diet and physical activity affect chronic disease risk; (2) study the contextual and family/household-level factors that contribute to dietary practices among Hispanics; (3) assess the effect of family- and community-based interventions on disease risk reduction; and (4) develop and implement culturally-appropriate interventions for cardiometabolic disease risk reduction among Hispanic families.

Abstract: This presentation will outline some of the factors that contribute to disparities in health outcomes for members of the Hispanic population. It will then explore the role of dietary behaviors on chronic disease prevention strategies. Finally, it will showcase culturally-relevant family-focused intervention programs for healthy eating promotion among members of this population.
