Memorial Day Parade Information
The Penn Marching Kingsmen normally participate in two Memorial Day Parades every year; the Osceola Parade which begins at 8:00am, and the Mishawaka Parade, which begins at 9:30am. The expectation is that every marching band winds and percussion member will be in the parade band unless they have turned in an excuse explaining the conflict that will cause their absence. This performance is optional for our color guard.
An unexcused absence for the parade (parade absence without a parent email received by May 16th) will result in a reduction of marching band award points for this year. Excuses for this year’s parade are due by Friday, May 16th. An excused absence can be obtained with a parent email to gnorthern@phm.k12.in.us or to dlandoll@phm.k12.in.us explaining the conflict in detail.
Be sure to hydrate and get a good night’s sleep on the 25th, and to eat breakfast that morning before you arrive!
The schedule for Monday May 26th (Memorial Day) is:
6:30am Door C open
Students should arrive with under-armour, marching shoes, black socks
6:45am Change into marching band uniforms
Load large instruments on trailer (small instruments ride with students)
7:15am Load buses and depart for Osceola
8:00am Osceola Parade Steps Off
8:20am Osceola Parade Ends
Get Water
Load trailer & buses
9:00am Leave Osceola for Downtown Mishawaka
9:10am Unload and stage for Mishawaka Parade
10:15am Approximate Step-off into the Mishawaka Parade
11:30am Return to Penn
Unload trailer
Change out of uniform
Turn in school instruments as needed
Dismissed
Happy Mother’s Day! I am so glad you are all a part of our band family!
Jazz in the Park
DATE: Thursday, May 15
TIME: 6 PM
LOCATION: Ironworks Plaza in Mishawaka
COST: Free!
ANY OTHER DETAILS FOR STUDENTS: We will need help loading equipment on the trailer at Penn after school on Thursday afternoon. We will also need help unloading and setting up at Ironworks Plaza for the concert. If you are able to help with this, please let Mr. Griesser know. If you’re not able to help with loading after school, still plan to be at Ironworks Plaza by 5:15 for the final setup and soundcheck before the concert starts at 6:00. We will wear our normal jazz concert attire for this performance.
PMK Percussion Spring Training Sessions
PMK Percussion Spring Training Sessions began on 5/7 in the band room at Penn High School from 6:00-8:00 PM. These sessions are open not only to current 8th-11th grade percussionists, but also any wind players, string players, or choir members who have an interest in joining the percussion section.
Attendance at these sessions will be critical moving forward, as we work to set the percussion section for next season. It is important that we have an accurate representation of our personnel within the next couple of weeks, so that our design team can start to create custom arrangements for us. If you are interested in playing percussion in the marching band, but haven’t attended any of our previous sessions, no worries - it is not too late to join!
Also, for those interested in a spot in the battery (snare, tenors, bass), we will be doing Battery “Audition Workshops” on Wednesday, 5/14 and Monday, 5/19. Our goal will be to have the battery placements set by the end of rehearsal on the 19th.
You can find the remainder of our spring schedule here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1YsixGuHSP39-hrcsNYb6d3Fsi4nq0Qnz5Ng0bZ8M5jM/edit?usp=sharing
We also have a Google Drive folder, which contains warm-up packets and other materials for the marching season: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1beDvNxdrazqGrGRSN74u0h3w_7yaZeo-?usp=sharing
Please contact Mr. Griesser at agriesser@phm.k12.in.us if you have any questions.
We have a few spots where we need your help:

QUESTION: I signed my child up for Marching Band, but what do I do now? I know I need to make payments, but how do I do that?
1. Yeah! Welcome to our amazing Band Family!
2. Mr. Northern and Mr. Landoll will load the Marching Band fees into Cuttime for your child, and the system will send you a text or email asking you to pay. You can pay over the next several months. (NOTE: The new system requires that you have a charge before you can make a payment in the system. That is different than the old Charms system.)
3. You can also make a payment via check and avoid the credit card fees by having your child take it to the Penn Bookstore or mailing it to Penn HS c/o Mr. Landoll. Please make checks payable to Penn Bands.
4. I have questions – how do I get them answered? Feel free to email Mr. Landoll dlandoll@phm.k12.in.us or Mr. Northern gnorthern@phm.k12.in.us or you can email me (Sheri) if you want the parent scoop.
