The realm of music education has always been a shaky one. Our district is one of the more fortunate districts as we have specialists: talented and wonderful teachers that are masters at their specific instrument field, be it winds, strings, bass, etc. However, some teachers have to teach instruments outside their instrument group, thus making it hard to further a student's progress without looking for external sources, which oftentimes require and outside commitment of time and money. We want to help them while also giving aspiring musicians a mentor to partner with.
We've noticed the lack of personalized and student-tailored instruction, due to the fact that most lessons in public schools and other schools in general are taught in group settings. Based on our personal experiences, this doesn't always work and can leave some students feeling left out and not cared for. This is in no way, shape or form the teacher's fault, but the sheer number of students that they have to cater to. So, we decided to take matters into our own hands.
In the fall of 2022, we took part in Project 440's Doing Good program with a desire to make an impact through music. After many failed project iterations, we decided to tackle the issue of music education. We work with talented high school musicians across the district to help support the next generation of musicians as well as help music teachers. We hope that this organization grows into an everlasting resource for aspiring musicians and teachers alike.
Many studies show that music and other performing arts provide an outlet for stress relief, and allows creative expression that any student can take part in. Music transcends the limits of traditional language and is a universal part of life. Music allows people to express their emotions which would normally be extremely difficult.
Education wise, music fosters teamwork and collaboration, two important factors in playing in an ensemble. It breeds hard-work and determination, through practice and performance. It improves listening capabilities as well as stimulating the brain, allowing for stronger mental processing and problem-solving skills. It is even shown to boost memory and language capabilities!
Through our program, we hope to excite students after a long school day and encourage them to tell their story through music. We hope that they look forward to their lesson and look forward to spending more time with their mentor; working to forge a connection that will last a lifetime.
We hope that music comes out to be a truly sound decision for every student.
