Languages & Tests

Languages other than English

The test you take is determined by tests available for your language(s). If you apply for the Seal in more than one language, you may take two different types of tests, but they all measure proficiency in a similar way!

Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish

These languages have a test called the ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages® (AAPPL). The test is taken online and has four components. The test has to be proctored, but can be taken whenever the student and proctor are available, because it is entirely online.

Albanian, Amharic, Bangla, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Cantonese, Croatian, Dari, Gujarati, Haitian Creole, Hebrew, Hindi, Malayalam, Pashto, Polish, Swahili, Tagalog, Tamil, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Urdu, Vietnamese, and Yoruba.

These languages are tested with a combination of the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) and the Writing Proficiency Test (WPT)

The interview is scheduled with a trained linguist, so you'll need to reply to your teacher's emails about your schedule!

In these circumstances, you will collect a portfolio with samples of your speaking and writing, assisted by your school's lead Point-Person.

The Seal of Biliteracy team works hard to find qualified raters in our school community to assess this speaking (or signing) and writing portfolio!
