Spring 2022 - Directives Review

The Office of School Safety began revising its Directives in January 2021 through systematic review by a committee. The committee includes members of the Office of School Safety executive team, School Safety Officers, Supervisors, Area Managers, investigators, and a member of the Office of General Council. Additionally, all changes are approved by Chief Bethel before general distribution. In an effort to highlight the work of this committee as well as ensure all members of the Office of School Safety are aware of the changes that have been made to their Directives, it will be expected that each staff member complete trainings which review the updated Directives. This initial training will include directives for search and seizure, use of force officer code of conduct, and proper attire & appearance.

Welcoming Sanctuary Schools Protocols

The School District of Philadelphia is committed to fostering safe and welcoming environments for all students and their families, regardless of their immigration status, national origin, race, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, familial status, religion, or person’s abilities. This course will be used to inform Office of School Safety personnel of updates to the District's policies regarding interactions with any immigration agents on school property.

3 Things You Can Do When Facing Verbally Challenging People

Do you find yourself encountering people in crisis? Do you try to identify with the person's human emotions? John Wallschlaeger shares three things you can do to help make your encounter more predictable and create more positive outcomes.

Time and Attendance

Learn how to use the Kronos system, submit your time out requests (following the SADS steps), view an outline of all District time-off policies, and how to submit overtime requests for approval by your manager.

COVID-19 Compliance

In order to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 during the pandemic, the School District of Philadelphia has implemented several health & safety protocols for all students, staff and visitors. The District has also initiated a Pandemic Compliance Reporting System, which is designed to identify instances of noncompliance of the it‘s policies and procedures related to surface disinfection, social distancing, prevention, infection, and the use of PPE in response to a pandemic.

Back to Basics: Equity, Belonging & YOU!

Dr. Erika L. McDowell, from Inspired Minds Collide, delivers a session to unpack the terms diversity, equity, and inclusion, understand the importance of belonging, and learn how to ensure our school environments feels secure and supportive. By the end of this session, you should be able to develop a space where all stakeholder voices are valued and used to cultivate environments where all students, including marginalized, can thrive.

Digging Deep Into Implicit Bias and Our Vulnerability

Dr. Erika L. McDowell returns to discuss the sources of unintentional decision-making, including implicit prejudice/ bias. During this session you will unpack how judgements based on unconscious stereotypes are detrimental in the workplace and schools. Your work in this area will end with a review of a Vulnerable Decision Point (VDP) and how the two parts of the VDP come into play during each decision. Please note: "Back to Basics: Equity, Belonging, & YOU" should be taken prior to completing this course.

How to Recognize and Overcome Bias

In this course, you’ll look at the brain functions that cause bias, and the real and harmful consequences of even unintentional bias—including messages from bestselling author and psychologist Dr. Jennifer Eberhardt. You’ll also learn about common bias types. Finally, you’ll get strategies to break out of these mental habits and enjoy a more productive, engaging workplace and community. By bringing awareness to our unintentional assumptions, we can address and overcome the effects of implicit bias.

Do you have implicit or explicit bias? Do you know how to identify the bias that you possess? Tekoa Pouerie shares three critical things surrounding the differences between implicit and explicit bias and what negative impact they can have if ignored.

EEO for Supervisors

Overview of discrimination, harassment, and liability policies for supervisors. Attention will be, specifically, paid to the compliant/ reporting procedures for the School District of Philadelphia.

Employee and Labor Relations

Members of the SDP Labor Relations team will walk you through District policies regarding due process, absence guidelines, probation and disciplinary procedures. The hope of the session is to ensure employee accountability through a greater understanding of the disciplinary process for handling employee incidents and absences in alignment with School District goals. Discipline should not be punitive. Using a restorative and coaching model.

Resolving Conflict

At best, workplace conflict stifles communication and productivity. At its worst, tensions escalate to aggression and bullying. That’s why it’s important to address conflict quickly. In this course, you’ll learn common sources of discord and some typical responses to it. You’ll also discover techniques to resolve conflict, address anger, and stop abusive behavior.
