First Quarter Writing Focus:
W. 4.4 Narrative Writing
Writing Objective:
Students will be able to write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.
Through modeled, guided, and independent writing. students will learn to:
*Orient the reader by establishing a situation and introducing a narrator and/or characters.
*Organize an event sequence that unfolds naturally.
*Use dialogue and description to develop experiences and events, or show the responses of characters to situations.
*Use a variety of transitional words and phrases to manage the sequence of events.
*Use concrete words and phrases and sensory details to convey experiences and events precisely.
*Provide a conclusion that follows from narrated experiences or events.
Students will also learn to:
*Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection and research.
*With guidance and support, employ the writing process through planning, revising and editing.
*With guidance and support, use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing.
Sample genres include: creative imaginary stories, realistic fiction, biographies, autobiographies, memoirs, anecdotes, story retelling, responses to literature, and poetry.
Writing Interactive Notebook
Students will keep an interactive notebook in a marble composition book. This will be checked monthly in the classroom. Students are responsible for following directions, keeping their notebook neat and completing writing assignments in their notebook. They must only use their interactive writing notebook for writing. Points will be deducted for off-task doodling and torn pages.
