COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Description

The Murrell Dobbins CTE HS Barber Program prepares high school students for the Pennsylvania State Board of Barbering License Examination. The program includes all aspects of hair and skin care for people of every ethnicity. This program is designed to provide students with the theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and professional ethics necessary to pass the State Board License exam and obtain a barber license. Upon graduation, students who have earned at least 1250 hours will be eligible to take the state licensing examination necessary to obtain employment in the barbering field. The Pennsylvania State Board of Barber Examiners requires that each barbering student should maintain a complete barber kit in class in order to receive full credit.

****Students, this class will prepare you to work and succeed in a barber shop as a licensed professional.Therefore, you are required to have your barber kit in class every day this school year.Left it at home, did not feel like bringing it, don’t have it today, you lost it, someone stole it, dog ate it, etc. will cost you your hours for the day (equal to 40% of your daily wages/grade for each day you do not have your kit in class).****

● Bacteriology

● Chemistry, Anatomy and Physiology

● Properties & Disorders of the Hair Scalp

● Infection Control & Safe Work Practices

● Implements, Tools and Equipment

● Beard and Mustache Trimming

● Electrical Safety & Light Therapy

● Haircutting and Styling

● Hair Coloring

● Permanent Waving

● Shaving and Facial Hair Design

● Facial Massage & Treatments

● Shop Management

● State Board Preparation

Students will have the opportunity to earn approximately 106.50 hours per quarter and 424 hours per school year. To earn the maximum of three hours each day (one per class period), students must be:

On time for class;

Prepared for class with the necessary supplies and equipment (complete barber kit, pencil/pen, notebook,) and;

Actively participating in the success of each day’s lesson, no exceptions.

All barbering students must earn 1250 credit hours over the course of three years in order- three hours a day, usually five days a week- (between 10th to 12th grades) in order to be registered to take the Pennsylvania Barber License Exam
