Like many other different parts of factories and industrial work at a time, efficiency was a priority. The workplace was crowded and with the amount of blood, it was hard for butchers to see anything. The combination of the cramped working area, obscured vision, and constant rush to get things done lead to injures, such as cut fingers

On the topic of the meat itself, inspection was not strictly enforced. Diseased animals were not removed or taken away. Sometimes diseased animals were even bought intentionally for a discount. In fact, many animals would die from disease during the transport process, which did not deter packing companies from making use of them.
