DISCC's first goal is to replace Central's water faucets. We have noticed that in the Central building, the bathroom water faucets have become very leaky. We see this as a conservation problem that we should be working to fix. We have been researching the importance of water and how water scarcity is increasing all across the globe. We see it as our job to try to preserve water as much as we can, and one way we can do that is by replacing our water faucets.
Why Water Conservation?
Water conservation is our first main focus for DISCC. We decided to focus on water because of the lack of awareness about the shrinking access of potable (drinkable) water. Through research, we have learned about how much more we should be valuing water, as we have a very limited amount of it. It is estimated that by 2025, half of the world’s people will live in countries with high water stress, which means those countries will need more water than there will be available. Soon water will be valued in the way petroleum is, but unlike petroleum, water is crucial for humans to live. This information caused DISCC to want to help the situation and after brainstorming, we decided to start the major project of replacing our school's water faucets.
Why Water Faucets?
It is estimated that a leaky faucet can waste 34 gallons of potable water per day. Over a year, that accumulates to over 12,000 gallons of wasted water. Central's bathrooms are plagued with leaky faucets. If we were able to replace the faucets and save this water, the act would save much more water than any individual could do on their own. So as a club we are working together to achieve this goal.
