Since the fall of 2024, students at Crossroads Accelerated Academy have undertaken the task of monitoring and maintaining dozens of birdhouses located around Fox Chase Farms.
In partnership with the Audubon Society, the project is an attempt to revitalize Philadelphia's population of Eastern Bluebirds and other native cavity-nesting birds. Students are responsible for identifying and clearing invasive nesting material, repairing or replacing old boxes, collecting and reporting nesting data to eBird and monitoring the success of the project through careful observation and documentation.
In addition to box monitoring and maintenance, data collection plays an essential role in conservation. Using GPS data and Google Earth mapping, students document any noteworthy data pertaining to each nesting site at Fox Chase Farm, including nesting materials used, predatory activity, and bird fatalities.
