Leadership Opportunities

The need-to-know: Teen WOARRIOR is a youth leadership group that meets biweekly (virtually) to discuss and take action on issues related to sexual violence prevention. Flyer attached. Please share with your students.

The full scoop:

Here at WOAR - Philadelphia Center Against Sexual Violence, we have a program called Teen WOARRIOR. This is a youth leadership council that meets biweekly and gives teens across Philadelphia a space to discuss sexual violence prevention, and to take action. The council is a youth-focused and youth-led group who works together to shift social norms through engaging peers and allies to promote healthy relationships, creating a consent culture, active bystander engagement, and other relevant issues. This can include creating educational social media content, creating posters to take to school (healthy relationships around valentines day, alcohol and consent awareness in prom season, etc.), general discussion, and more.

This can be a great opportunity for students to meet engaged students from other schools, pursue an interest in social justice, build their resumes, and flex their activist and leadership skills.

As part of the Summit, we are offering students the opportunity to join the Student Steering Committee, which will help shape the student-focused portion of the event—the Student Expo. The Expo is dedicated to showcasing student-led sustainability projects, and this committee will ensure that student voices are involved from the start.

Please consider sharing this opportunity with students who are passionate about sustainability, leadership, and event planning. Serving on the committee will give students valuable experience in event organization and an active role in shaping a district-wide event.

Application Materials:
For convenience, here are the links to the Student Steering Committee Application and Informational Poster (attached as pdf).

Applications are due November 27th, 2024.

Do you know a high school student with a passion for the teaching profession?

High School students are invited to join PEDC at The Hive Philadelphia on March 12th, 2025, 4pm for the Inspire to Teach: Career Resource Fair. Welcoming students and their caregivers, this event is designed to spark a passion for teaching by connecting high school students with teacher prep programs and professional networks.

Summer Programs/Jobs

S.C.O.P.E. is a four (4) week academic intensive program during which students take several courses including a Research and Writing course, an academic skills course, and a college preparatory course.  The program will run in its’ entirety from Tuesday, July 1st through Friday, July 25th, 2025.  The program will be held at the University Park campus located in State College, Pennsylvania.

The program comes at no fee to the participant and will be challenging academically, but students having completed the program leave with a renewed sense of potential and determination.  It is our hope to prepare students for a successful college experience.  Overall, S.C.O.P.E. is a wonderful opportunity through which students get a feel for education careers, college life in general and Penn State in particular.

To be eligible, a student must meet the following criteria:

We also concentrate our efforts on the recruitment of potential first-generation college students and students with limited financial resources.

The S.C.O.P.E. application requires the nomination of the school guidance counselor, teacher or other school/program official.  S.C.O.P.E. is actively recruiting students interested in careers in the field of education.  We recognize that students in their 10th grade year of high school are often still exploring career interests; however, because of limited space, our focus is on those students showing interest in education professions.  We are asking that nominators fully consider their candidate and evaluate that individual’s interest in working in the educational field. Due to the high number of applications we receive, we will be screening candidates very carefully.  The nomination and letters of recommendation will be an important factor in our selection process; however, a nomination is not tantamount to an applicant’s acceptance.

The application due date (postmark date) is January 13th, 2025.

We invite all high-achieving high school juniors with financial need to apply.

Do you or someone you know fit these requirements?

If so, you are eligible to apply.

If selected, each Bovard Scholar will have one full year of support through the admissions cycle and spend two weeks on the USC campus, where they will receive:

This year, the summer intensive runs from July 14, 2025, through August 2, 2025.

We offer the program at no cost to students or families. USC will pay for transportation to and from campus for students outside of Southern California.

Applications are due January 17, 2025, at 5:00 pm PST.

Many high school and college students may not have an opportunity to be exposed to clinical research principles during their education. Engaging these students in research fosters community ties and cultivates the next generation of pediatric healthcare innovators. We are proud to grow this program and welcome students to the hospital to further their extracurricular education.

You can learn more about the program here:

Please see the flyer and application if interested.

Current 10th and 11th graders from Philadelphia School District, charter schools, and other schools by invitation will join Penn labs to participate in research under mentored guidance. The program is free, even transportation is covered, and students receive a $1500 financial award.

The application requires students to write a short essay, submit a transcript, and one letter of recommendation. The final date for applications is March 16. Here is the website, where you will find additional details about the program and the application. See attached a flyer for the program.

The registration portal for the camp is now open and can be found at the Camp website (Health and Biomedical Sciences Summer Program).  Because space is limited, and we anticipate the program will fill quickly, we recommend that students submit their registration as soon as possible to secure a slot.

The goal of the Health and Biomedical Sciences Summer Program is to provide a window into the scientific basis of human health.  Through lectures and hands-on laboratory investigations in state-of-the-art laboratories, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of disciplines such as molecular biology, neuroscience, physiology, pharmacology, immunology, and other medical sciences.  Students will learn how laboratory science can be translated into improved human health, and they will engage in investigative experiences that will allow them to apply their laboratory skills to real life problems.  In addition, students will interact with practicing professionals in fields such as medicine, physician assistant, physical therapy, psychology, toxicology, and biomedical laboratory research. The Health and Biomedical Sciences camp will provide a fun, challenging and engaging college environment in which students will develop a deeper understanding of what it means to be a biomedical scientist and health professional.

For more information, or if you have questions about the camp, you can visit the Health and Biomedical Sciences website (http://www.lvc.edu/academics/summer-community-programming/health-biomedical-sciences-camp/) or contact Dr. Courtney Lappas at lappas@lvc.edu.  See flyer here!

The goal of the fair is to provide exposure opportunities to our high school students that will assist them to meet their pathway to graduation needs.

TRIP is an intensive week-long science exploratory program for select high school students from Philadelphia and the surrounding communities. At its core, the program aims to foster a love for science whilst building resiliency, communication, and critical thinking skills outside the traditional confines of school.

Importantly, this program is free for all students.  Our previous sessions of the program have shown it to be transformative to students, giving them a much-needed peek into the science world that both excites their imagination and helps with career path decisions.

Instructions on how to apply can be found at https://www.tripinitiative.com/apply-to-summer-trip.html. We are looking for bright, talented, and motivated students that can commit to the entirety of at least one of the sessions of the program and that want to learn more about research.

Additional information about the program can be found on our website.
