Louisiana does not require a license for HVAC technicians, but a license is required for a mechanical contractor performing heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration work valuing more than $10,000. A technician must either hold the mechanical contractor license or work under a licensed mechanical contractor. Contractor licenses are issued through the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors.
Mechanical Contractors performing worik in HVAC will be required to hold the Heating, Air Conditioning, Ventilation, Duct Work, and Refrigeration sub-classification.
18+ years of age
Have a high school diploma or GED certificate
Complete approved training through trade school, local union apprenticeship, or informal apprenticeship
Hold EPA Certification
Complete required training requirement.
Complete EPA Certification.
Submit application, including supporting business documents.
Schedule examination.
Pass written examinations for business and law, and HVAC-specific exam.
Receive license.
Maintain license registration as required.
HVAC technicians are not required to be registered with the contractors board, but must be employed by a licensed mechanical contractor.
Note: Techs handling refrigerants are federally required to complete EPA Section 608 certification.
