Kandra James works to bring integrated, customized solutions to educators nationally through Curriculum Associates instructional resources, digital platforms and professional services. Kandra began her publishing career as an educational consultant with Harcourt Publishing. In the years prior, she directed a research and development grant at a non-profit education association in support of teachers sitting for National Board Certification. Her teaching experience includes technical training and curriculum development for the US Department of Justice, and classroom teaching Kindergarten to Grade 9 in Philadelphia, PA and Washington, DC. Kandra holds a BA in Psychology, with a focus on human growth and development from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA and an MA in Teaching, with a focus on early literacy from Trinity University in Washington, DC.
This session will give participants an opportunity to investigate the basics of supporting students’ better comprehension of complex text. Participants will investigate close reading as a comprehension strategy and gain an understanding of the basic mechanics included in a lesson that utilizes close reading techniques. Participants will also investigate text analysis through text dependent questions to support comprehension and examine text annotation strategies that can help students learn to be better note taker to support comprehension.
