According to Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) policy:
A student is considered chronically absent if they miss 10% or more of school days while enrolled.
A student is considered habitually truant if they have been enrolled for 91 or more days and have 20% or more unlawful (unexcused) absences. This may result in legal consequences.
It’s important to understand that frequent absences—whether excused or unexcused—can negatively affect a student’s academic performance, ability to keep up with classwork, and may impact their graduation status.
Some absences are considered lawful (excused) under PGCPS guidelines, including:
Illness (with a note if over 3 days)
Death in the family
Mental health days (1 per semester)
Certain legal, weather, or family-related reasons
All other absences are considered unlawful and are marked with attendance code “20.” If your child has several 20s in Synergy, they have accrued a significant amount of unlawful absences. Students who are absent and do not provide proper documentation to the school attendance master will be marked unlawfully absent.
