Personal Safety Letter to Parents

Dear parents,

Prince George’s County Public Schools’ strategic plan promotes academic achievement for all students. In order for our students to learn, we recognize that safe and supportive environments must exist. While many strategies are implemented daily to ensure our students’ safety, we acknowledge the value of providing educational opportunities for our students to learn “personal safety”. Through classroom counseling lessons, your professional school counselor can assist your child in learning:

· Differences between appropriate and inappropriate physical contact

· Personal body safety rules and when to use them

· How to identify trusted adults to whom they can report when they feel unsafe

In accordance to the PGCPS Board of Education Policy #0126, all schools are required to present personal safety lessons to our students. Implementing an effective curriculum on personal safety for children can raise our students’ awareness of abuse, increase disclosure when abuse has occurred and serve as a preventative measure in the future.

This letter is to inform you that your child’s school counselor will begin implementing age-appropriate personal safety lessons with students. Parents/Guardians are more than welcome to preview the lesson prior to its implementation.

In doing so, you can re-enforce these tools for personal safety with your child. We will lead the way to stop the cycle of child abuse in Prince George’s County.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your child’s professional school counselor at 301-390-0220 or samantha.buker@pgcps.org
