World Language Department Instructional Goal – SY 2026–27
The World Language Department will implement consistent, data-driven instructional practices across all Spanish courses to improve student achievement, increase course success rates, and support Potomac High School’s goals of increasing 9th-grade promotion and 12th-grade graduation rates. Teachers will use common assessments, student performance data, and targeted instructional interventions to identify learning gaps, adjust instruction, and provide timely support to students throughout the school year.

Cada uno aporta una amplia experiencia en la enseñanza del español, pasión por la cultura hispana y dedicación al desarrollo de habilidades lingüísticas auténticas.

Our faculty is composed of highly qualified professionals committed to academic excellence and the holistic development of our students. Each member brings extensive experience in teaching Spanish, a passion for Hispanic culture, and a dedication to fostering authentic language skills.
The department is proudly represented by Dr. Nelson Ronda Rivera, Dr. Omar Cruz, Mr. Mario Garnica, and Ms. Concepción Damián-Centeno, who work together to provide an innovative, inclusive, and culturally relevant education.

Mario Garnica es actualmente el Department Chair del Departamento de Español en Potomac High School y cuenta con 22 años de experiencia docente. Realizó sus estudios de licenciatura en Educación General con concentración en Docencia en la Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán en México.
Después de enseñar durante tres años en México, se trasladó a Luisiana, donde trabajó por 14 años en programas de enseñanza del español. En 2022 se incorporó al sistema educativo de Maryland, continuando su compromiso con la enseñanza de la lengua y la cultura hispana.
Cursó su maestría en la Universidad de Louisiana Monroe (ULM) y actualmente se encuentra en la fase final de su doctorado en la Universidad de las Américas y el Caribe, donde desarrolla su tesis.

Mario Garnica currently serves as the Department Chair of the Spanish Department at Potomac High School and brings 21 years of teaching experience. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in General Education with a concentration in Teaching from the Autonomous University of Yucatán, Mexico.
After teaching for three years in Mexico, he moved to Louisiana, where he dedicated 14 years to Spanish language programs. In 2022, he relocated to Maryland, continuing his commitment to promoting the Spanish language and Hispanic culture.
He completed his Master’s degree at the University of Louisiana Monroe (ULM) and is now in the final phase of his Doctoral degree at the Universidad de las Américas y el Caribe, where he is currently writing his dissertation.
Omar Cruz Padilla Ed. D

Omar Cruz Padilla cuenta con una sólida trayectoria en el ámbito educativo y comunitario. Posee un grado asociado en Educación Preescolar (CDA), una Maestría en Supervisión y Dirección Escolar, y un Doctorado en Educación de la Universidad de las Américas y el Caribe (2024).
Con más de 30 años de experiencia, trabajó en el Departamento de Educación de Puerto Rico y en programas Head Start durante 25 años, y en el Sistema Escolar del Condado de Prince George por los últimos seis años. Además de su labor docente en el Departamento de Español de Potomac High, es autor de varios libros sobre autoestima publicados en Amazon.
Su versatilidad lo ha llevado a destacar como payaso profesional, árbitro de lucha libre, baloncesto y voleibol, así como exitoso coach deportivo. También dirigió el grupo musical Bravo Swing en Puerto Rico, consolidando así una carrera multifacética y enriquecedora.

Omar Cruz Padilla has built a distinguished career in education and community engagement. He holds an Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education (CDA), a Master’s in School Supervision and Administration, and a Doctorate in Education from the University of the Americas and the Caribbean (2024).
With over 30 years of experience, he worked for 25 years with the Puerto Rico Department of Education and Head Start programs, and for the past six years in the Prince George’s County School System. Currently serving in the Spanish Department at Potomac High School, he is also the author of several books on self-esteem available on Amazon.
Beyond education, he is a professional clown, referee in wrestling, basketball, and volleyball, and a successful coach in both basketball and volleyball. He also directed the music group Bravo Swing in Puerto Rico, reflecting a multifaceted and accomplished career.

Nelson Ronda-Rivera nació en Manatí, Puerto Rico. Poseo un bachillerato en educación elemental general, una maestría en educación con especialidad en Diseño de Currículo en Estudios Sociales, tiene estudios doctorales en Historia de América Latina y el Caribe de la Universidad de Sevilla en España y un doctorado en Educación con especialidad en Liderazgo en Educación Superior de Nova Southeastern University (NSU,Florida). Tiene la certificación del Estado de Maryland como maestro de Educación Elemental 1-6 y World Language Pk-12.
Trabajó como maestro de nivel elemental en Puerto Rico por 27 años, por otro lado, fue profesor universitario por 18 años en el programa de educación y programas graduados en diferentes universidades en Puerto Rico. Trabajo durante tres años en PGCPS como maestro de español, matemáticas, salud y estudios sociales en quinto y segundo grado. Este año estará como maestro de español en la escuela superior Potomac High School.

Nelson Ronda-Rivera was born in Manati, Puerto Rico. He has a bachelor's degree in elementary education, a master's degree in education with a specialty in Curriculum Design in Social Studies. He has doctoral studies in History of Latin America and the Caribbean from the University of Sevilla in Spain and a doctorate in Education with a specialty in Leadership in Higher Education from Nova Southeastern University (NSU, Florida). He is certified by the State of Maryland as a teacher for Elementary Education 1-6 and World Language Pk-12. He worked as an elementary level teacher in Puerto Rico for 27 years, on the other hand, he was a university professor for 18 years in the education program and graduate programs in different universities in Puerto Rico. He worked for three years at PGCPS teaching Spanish, Math, Health, and Social Studies in fifth and second grades. This year he will be teaching Spanish at Potomac High School.

Concepción Damián-Centeno es egresada de la Licenciatura en Enseñanza del Español y actualmente se encuentra en proceso de titulación, mientras avanza en la obtención de su licencia docente en el estado de Maryland.
Cuenta con experiencia en el sistema educativo de los Estados Unidos como paraprofesional. Inició su trayectoria en Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) y actualmente se desempeña como Paraprofesional Educativa de Desarrollo del Idioma Inglés (ELD-ML) en PGCPS, donde también colabora con el Departamento de Comprehensive Resource Instruction (CRI), apoyando a estudiantes con necesidades educativas especiales. Durante el año escolar 2026–2027 impartirá las asignaturas de Español 1 y Español 3 para Hablantes Nativos en Potomac High School.

Concepción Damián-Centeno completed the academic requirements for a Bachelor's degree in Teaching Spanish and is currently completing the degree conferral process while working toward obtaining her Maryland teaching license.
She has experience in the U.S. educational system as a paraprofessional. She began her career with Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) and currently serves as Paraprofessional Educator(ELD-ML) at Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS), where she also collaborates with the Comprehensive Resource Instruction (CRI) Department, supporting students with special educational needs. During the 2026–2027 school year, she will teach Spanish 1 and Spanish 3 for Native Speakers at Potomac High School.
