Volunteer Coordinator and Teacher Resources

Welcome to the William S. Schmidt Outdoor Education Center (Camp Schmidt).  It is our pleasure to host your school this year. This site is intended for teachers who will be attending the overnight Schmidt Center Outdoor experience trip.  Feel free to call the Schmidt Center office, (301) 888-1185 between 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Monday-Friday, with any questions. All meals, except for lunch on the first day, are provided to participants. This is the suggested packing list for participants.

Schools will typically stay at the Villages or the Orme school building. Volunteer Teachers are required to instruct for five of the six activities offered at the Schmidt Center: Confidence Course, Deer Detective, Orienteering, Problem Solving, Woodland Ecology (Nature Hike).  Our sixth activity, Stream Ecology, will be taught by a staff member from the Center.  The Confidence Course is open but schools may only use it with the appropriately trained staff members. If the Confidence Course has to be closed, then team building will be its replacement.  Contact Travis Long for more information about the Confidence Course at travis.long@pgcps.org

Please review the activity booklet and associated video for the lesson you have been charged with teaching before attending the field trip.  There is very little time to review the activities once you arrive at the Schmidt Center.
