Science and Technology Program

The PGCPS Science and Technology Program (S/T) is a rigorous four-year high school course of study that provides broad and intensive college-level academic experiences, with content and application focused on science, mathematics, pre-engineering and technology.

Students in S/T are required to obtain a minimum of thirteen (13) credits in mathematics, engineering, research and science courses. External experiences are a major component of the program, enrollment in dual enrollment and Advanced Placement (AP) coursework and completion of exams is strongly encouraged, and completion of a Research Practicum is mandatory. A PGCPS Board of Education Certificate of completion will be awarded to each student who completes the minimum 13 Science and Technology credits, meets the minimum requirements for high school graduation, maintains a minimum four-year cumulative quality point average of 2.5 and completes the senior research practicum.

Program History The Science and Technology Program, established in 1976, is offered at three centers in Prince George’s County: Eleanor Roosevelt High School (1000 students), serving the northern area, Charles H. Flowers High School (600 students), serving the central area, and Oxon Hill High School (600 students), serving the southern area. Students may only attend the center that serves their legal residence. Transportation is provided for all students enrolled in S/T.

Admission Policy Admission to the Science and Technology Program is highly competitive. Students’ eligibility is determined based on their PSAT score and quarter grades in english, math, science and social studies. Tenth grade students are admitted on a space available basis and must apply to be considered for the limited number of openings per year. In all instances, grades in major subjects and scores on the standardized admissions test are the only criteria used to determine admission.

Pre-college Program The Science and Technology Program is a highly structured four-year academic program. Of twenty-eight possible credits, a student is required to obtain a minimum of twelve and one-half credits in specific mathematics, pre-engineering technology, science, and research courses. In grades nine and ten, the program consists of common experience courses for all students. In grades eleven and twelve, each student must choose coursework from one of four focus areas. Students are enrolled in a full schedule during the entire four-year program. External experiences in the form of internship and /or dual enrollment opportunities are possible and encouraged, but must be a direct extension of, or enrichment of The Science and Technology Program.

Research Oriented All students conduct annual science/engineering projects. Science and Technology Seniors must complete a research practicum resulting in a research project, similar to a master’s thesis.
