Dear Fourth-Grade Families,
I hope this message finds you well. We're grateful for your continued partnership and want to share important updates, celebrate recent successes, and remind you of a few upcoming events. Thank you for your ongoing support in helping our students thrive.
Celebrations from the Week
Pajama Day incentive (attendance): Last Friday’s Pajama Day was a cozy success — thank you for helping your students arrive and participate!
4th-Grade Dance Party (behavior incentive): Our 4th-graders had a wonderful time celebrating positive behavior with a dance party.
Looking ahead: We hope even more students will join us for April’s Glow Party (behavior incentive) and for our next attendance event. Your encouragement makes these celebrations meaningful.
Important Announcements
Friday, March 20 — Full school day for all students. Please arrive on time as usual.
Friday, March 27 — Early dismissal for students. This day is also Grandparents’ Day. If grandparents or caregivers plan to attend, please check with your child's teacher for any visiting details.
When: Thursday, March 26, 2026
Time: 9:30 am - 12:00 pm
Where: Benjamin D. Foulois Gymnasium

Spring Break — Four weeks away. Please mark your calendars and plan accordingly.
State testing (M.C.A.P.) — Six weeks away in April. We are preparing students now to feel confident and ready.
MCAP Pep Rally: April 8 — We will host a school-wide pep rally to build excitement and reduce test-day nerves.
4th-Grade Performance: Our 4th-graders will perform a song for the school during the pep rally — we’re excited to showcase their hard work!
Action items:
Note the early dismissal on March 27 and make necessary arrangements.
Encourage regular attendance and healthy routines as we approach testing season.
Additional Information
MCAP Preparation: Teachers are incorporating short, supportive review activities into daily lessons to build skills and confidence. At home, simple routines like a consistent bedtime, a healthy breakfast, and encouraging words about effort go a long way.
We are grateful for the ways you support learning at home and in the school community. Your partnership helps students feel safe, prepared, and excited to learn.
Thank you again for your ongoing support in making our school a welcoming place. We look forward to working together in the weeks ahead and celebrating our students’ successes.

In Class Research Project | Notable Black Marylanders
To recognize the achievements of Black Americans, I'm making a minor change to our curriculum and it's for our informational essay, we're writing in-class. Instead of students choosing a museum artifact as the writing subject, I'm going to ask students to choose a notable Black person from Maryland.
This year we've discussed Maryland history beginning in the 1700s. Two weeks ago we dedicated a day each to the famous Marylanders; Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass. We also learned about Matthew Henson.
Teaching this time period always makes me emotional not just because of the sensitive topics but it is emotional to see devastation on my students faces because they are hearing about slavery, segregation, and discrimination for the first time. Please don't be alarmed if your children tell you I was crying in class because I always cry but pull myself together to answer student questions. I'm answering all their questions while balancing both honesty and sensitivity. I'm also trying to provide age-appropriate answers to their many questions.
This year I'm impressed with the students' prior knowledge on these sensitive topics. Thank you. It makes answering their many questions easier.
Reading, Spelling, and Grammar Lessons for the week.
Spelling: short & long i words. Spelling Test Thursday, February 19th.
Grammar: Compound Sentences and Coordinating Conjunctions.
Story: Ten Suns a legend
Vocabulary Words: gratitude, withered, scorching, reckless, assumed, prosper
Reading Skills: synthesize, media techniques, literary elements, making connections

Some parents have asked about tutoring for their students. We'd like to introduce Brain Fuze. Please see the flyer before for more information.
We are excited to share that every student in Prince George’s County Public Schools has access to free, on-demand tutoring through Brainfuse, available anytime, anywhere. Brainfuse offers support in a variety of subjects, helping students with challenging concepts, skills, or homework while also supporting differentiated instruction. The program includes a Writing Lab where students can receive detailed feedback on assignments and is designed to support diverse learners.
For any questions regarding the Brainfuse service, please contact Sandra Rose, Innovation Officer at sandra.rose@pgcps.org.

iReady IS NOT a graded assignment this week.
This is a 4.5 days week of school. I discussed this at Back-to-School Night, only on week's with 5 school days. iReady IS a graded assignment this week. Students are required to pass 4 lessons this week. Students only need a 67% to pass each lesson. Some of the students are getting a 67% intentionally because of the viral meme. They're also aiming to get six and seven 67% in a row. That's fine with me. It takes a lot of thinking, understanding, and comprehension to get exactly 33% of questions incorrect to get the target score.
Classroom Temperatures
For 3 years now, it is always very warm in Mrs. Nimmons room, room 119. It doesn't matter the temperature outside, the heating unit will always work harder to keep it a toasty 85 degrees. The saying is, "It's always summer in room 119."
It's cooler in Mr. Curtis's room. It's usually a normal 70 to 75 degrees in there. A 15 degree difference between the two rooms can make it feel like you're either burning up or freezing depending on which room you're in.
Please allow students to bring a light jacket or sweater for Mr. Curtis's math and science so students feel comfortable. I will continue to leave my door open for air flow so students are comfortable.
We are grateful for your ongoing support in helping students grow academically and socially. Thank you for partnering with us — your involvement makes a real difference. I look forward to a fantastic February and to continuing our work together to support each student’s success.

Dear Fourth-Grade Families,
Update: To help students get threw the homework this week, we're going to complete the Monday-Tuesday activities in class. Students will have only half of the activities to complete, Wednesday-Thursday, at home.
I hope you are well. I am grateful for your continued partnership and for the care you show our scholars every day. Below are important updates, and helpful information to keep you informed and supported.
Our next behavior incentive is a Valentine's Day Party on Friday, February 13th for students with a 85% positive or higher for the month of January. Students can pass out Valentine's Day cards if they'd like to and we will complete a holiday craft. This day is also an early dismissal for students.
For your convenience, there are 26 students in each class.
41: Nimmons' homeroom has 11 boys and 15 girls.
42: Curtis' homeroom has 10 boys and 16 girls.
Benchmark 2 Testing for 4th-grade Reading
Our student will take the district’s Benchmark 2 Assessments. The purpose of these assessments is to measure what your child learned during the first quarter. The data gained from the Benchmarks supports teachers with identifying instructional strategies and resources to meet the needs of each scholar.
The Reading Benchmark 2 Assessment will run from Tuesday, February 3rd to Wednesday, February 4th. Please try your best to ensure your scholar is present both days of testing, as we have a limited amount of time to get the completed. The Prince George’s County Public Schools Assessment and Reporting Platform (PARP) will be used to administer the Benchmark 2 Assessments. No grades will be assigned based on these assessment results. The results of the Benchmark Assessments will be used by teachers and schools to enhance instruction on skills your child is learning in the classroom.

Happy New Year! I hope your family had a restful and rejuvenating winter break. It is a joy to welcome our students back. I am grateful for your continued partnership and support as we begin 2026 together. Thank you to the families who sent gifts and warm wishes during the holidays. I appreciate your thoughtfulness and generosity.
Our next behavior incentive is rescheduled for Tuesday, January 13th. I didn't allow enough time for families to buy gifts for us to exchange so we'll have an event the beginning of January. We'll have a gift exchange. The procedures for the gift exchange are forthcoming. Students will need at least 80% positive percentage on Class Dojo for the month of December.
CONGRATULATIONS! Every 4th-grader met the December goal of 80% positive for the month. So every student has the potential to participate in this month's incentive event.
Families, you will receive a form Monday, January 5th, with the name and preferences of a recipient in your child's class. The paper is labeled, Secret Santa.

Social and Emotional Learning and Intelligence: Goal Setting
After reflecting on the year, students will set long term goals for the future and determine what steps will help them get there. They will answer the following questions:
How have you improved this year?
What have you enjoyed learning?
What has been challenging?
What would you like to work on more?
Goal setting and planning was identifying as an executive functioning skill that is developed as our frontal lobes develop. They can provide purpose and motivation for tasks. Planning can help focus attention and prioritization, organization, time management, and emotional regulation. This week we will develop goal setting through practice.
Below is a brief (3:46) video on the importance of goal-setting.

determine the theme of the story
summarize the story
describe in depth a character
determine the genre of the text
point-of-view
identify a turning point or "Ah Ha Moment" in the text
iReady IS a graded assignment this week.
This is a 5 day week of school.
Future-Self : Social-Emotional Learning PBS Learning Media
I will share a student-friendly Class Dojo video on Growth Mindset for families to reference.
A 15 degree difference between the two rooms can make it feel like you're either burning up or freezing depending on which subject you're in.
I look forward to a fantastic January and to continuing our work together to support each student’s success.

The assembly is a rolling assembly. Third-grade is expected to call their roll around 10:15 a.m. and 4th-grade should begin around 10:30 a.m. We expect to finish calling all the 4th-grade by 10:40 a.m.
Pajama Days on Friday, December 9th AND Friday, December 19th for November's Monthly Behavior Incentive
Our next behavior incentive is for the month of November. We will hold a Pajama Day on Friday, December 19th for students with a 75% positive or higher for the month of November. CONGRATULATIONS to all our students. Every 4th-grader met the behavior requirement for November. Every student is eligible to wear pajamas this Friday if you wish.
Our next behavior incentive is rescheduled for Monday, January 12th. I didn't allow enough time for families to buy gifts for us to exchange so we'll have an event the beginning of January. We'll have a gift exchange. The procedures for the gift exchange are forthcoming. Students will need at least 80% positive percentage on Class Dojo for the month of December.
Mr. Curtis's homeroom class, the Rizzlers, had perfect attendance for all three days of CogAT testing. Mrs. Nimmons's homeroom had almost perfect attendance. Thank you for making sure your children came to school on time and for allowing testing to run smoothly.
Social and Emotional Learning and Intelligence: Honesty
Some students are not telling the truth but retelling stories they've made up in their heads as the truth. This is becoming a problem during recess. It's difficult to recount what happened when students are telling us adults what they imagined as opposed to what actually happened. Here is an example scenario.
Taffy: Mrs. Nimmons and Mr. Curtis, Jelly Beans hit me.
Teacher: Jelly Beans, why did you hit Snickers?
Jelly Beans: I didn't hit Taffy. I yelled at her and she hit me.
Taffy: Well actually, Jelly Beans didn't hit me but she yelled at me aggressively and I felt like I was in danger. I was afraid and my parent said whenever you're afraid, hit the person.
Teacher: Taffy, you're not being honest.
Taffy: I am being honest. I didn't lie.
To foster our students' social and emotional intelligence, we are learning the importance of telling the truth.

All 4th grade scholars in Prince George’s County will be taking the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) on December 9, December 10, and December 11. The CogAT is a verbal and non-verbal measure of abstract thinking and reasoning ability and must be administered over three separate days.
The CogAT test can only be administered in person in the school building. Results of this test are only one factor used to identify scholars for the Talented and Gifted (TAG) Program. Other factors include scholar achievement, teacher ratings in academics, creativity, task commitment, and other data relevant to individual scholars.
Please avoid appointments that may take your child out of school during this time. Results will be available in January 2026.
We would like to request your partnership to help ensure our scholars perform their best on the test. Please help them by making sure...
Your scholar arrives at school on testing days by 9:00 am.
Your scholar eats breakfast in the morning.
Your scholar gets a good night’s sleep.
Please encourage your child to do his/her best!
Thank you for your help. We know our scholars will do their best!
Last week's iReady did not count as a graded assignment.
We were all scheduled for a 5 day week of school but the weather delays meant students were in school for 3.5 days. As we discussed this at Back-to-School Night, only on week's with 5 school days. I planned to but WILL NOT consider last's week iReady lessons as a grade.

Last week you should have received both a BDF Academic Profile (Monday, Nov. 24th) and the report card (Tuesday, Nov. 25th) through the Boomerang Folder.
The Academic Profiles summarizes some important information and gives a more comprehensive picture of how students are doing in addition to the report cards. Here at BDF we send the profiles as a courtesy to families. If you have any questions, feel free to email Mrs. Nimmons (tabitha.nimmons@pgcps.org) and/or Mr. Curtis (robert.curtis@pgcps.org).

Social and Emotional Learning and Intelligence: Zones of Regulation
To foster our students' social and emotional intelligence, we are learning about expressing feelings through colors from the Zones of Regulation. Families can find more information here.
From the website:"The Zones of Regulation is a comprehensive, evidence-based framework that builds emotional and behavioral regulation skills through a lens of inclusion, accessibility, and science."
In class we watch videos about the 4 colors and the associated feelings.
We describe those different feelings and scenarios.
We play Zones of Regulation bingo.
We will create strategies to calm ourselves down to get back into the Green Zone.

NO HOMEWORK this week.
For the last week of each quarter, I don't assign homework so I can use the time to update grades before they are due.
October's Monthly Behavior Incentive
Friday, October 31st will be the monthly behavior incentive for October. This week is Red Ribbon Week, the week students and adults pledge to be drug free. Students may dress up as a superhero or antihero to show that they are against drugs. Below are some guidelines for the incentive/ school spirit event.
Students need at least a 70% Class Dojo positive percentage for the month of October. Students will wear their costumes over their regular school clothes. The literacy celebration will include the students listening to the teacher's favorite superhero books. Students will also learn about characters as an important part of stories. It’s also an early dismissal day with dismissal at 1:15 p.m.
Thank you for your help in making Spirit week special for our students.
Social and Emotional Learning and Intelligence
We are thrilled to report that we've almost completed the first quarter, and our students are adjusting wonderfully to 4th grade! Their enthusiasm for learning and growing together is truly uplifting. We have witnessed impressive teamwork, creativity, and a willingness to embrace new challenges. Thank you for encouraging your children to engage fully in their education!
Before our Back-to-School Night and Parent Conferences, we’d like to share some important information about our behavior management approach, which focuses on being proactive rather than reactive.
Here are the proactive strategies we are implementing to nurture our learning environment:
Shared Vocabulary: We are teaching a common language to help students understand behavior expectations.
Acting Out Scenarios: Students will engage in role-playing to better comprehend social norms.
Examples and Nonexamples: We provide clear instances of expected behaviors to ensure understanding.
To further clarify our behavior expectations, we have created a Treatment Agreement that covers:
How students treat each other
How they treat guests
How they treat teachers
How teachers should treat students
Additionally, we have discussed the concept of Respect, including "The Golden Rule," and the relative Size of Problems to foster appropriate responses to challenges, as well as the importance of recognizing and addressing bullying.
We also encourage a Growth Mindset, emphasizing that mistakes are opportunities for learning, and we will explore topics such as emotions, mindfulness, gratitude, and empathy.
Character Education is an essential part of our curriculum, focusing on BDF core values: perseverance, judgment, integrity, kindness, perspective, respect, and responsibility.
In alignment with our commitment to Social and Emotional Learning, we are utilizing the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) framework to develop self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.
Furthermore, we will work on enhancing Executive Functioning skills, including time management, attention, impulse control, and working memory, to help students achieve both academic and personal goals.
Finally, we will address misbehavior using the Conscious Discipline framework, starting with establishing trusting relationships and teaching self-regulation techniques through the Brain State Model and the Zones of Regulation.
Below are some resources related to the strategies mentioned above. These resources are intended to support you at home and reinforce what we are learning in school.

October's Monthly Behavior Incentive

Students may dress up as a superhero or antihero to show that they are against drugs. Below are some guidelines for the incentive/ school spirit event.
Students need at least a 70% Class Dojo positive percentage for the month of October. Students will wear their costumes over their regular school clothes. The literacy celebration will include the students listening to the teacher's favorite superhero books. Students will also learn about characters as an important part of stories. It’s also an early dismissal day with dismissal at 1:15 p.m.
Thank you for your help in making Spirit week special for our students.
Size of the Problem Resource
Last week Friday we began using "SIZE OF THE PROBLEM AND SIZE OF REACTION" resources in an effort to help students become smart problem solvers. This resource is helpful when teaching students self-regulation of their emotions. It helps with our commitment to help develop students not only academically but socially and emotionally.
We're including a parent letter and some visuals so teachers, students, and parents are all using the same language and vocabulary when discussing life problems and appropriate reactions. Feel free to use the resources as problems arise at school and home.
We're including a hard copy in the Boomerang folders on Monday, October 20th on blue paper.

October's Monthly Behavior Incentive
We had a lovely SPORTS DAY on Friday, October 12th. Students had a lot of fun. For October's behavior incentive, students will need a 70% positive or better by October 24th. The early date is because we want the incentive to be a costume day on Friday, October 31st. Students with a 70% positive Class Dojo percentage can come to school with a costume or bring their costume in a bag to change. The fourth-grade team will send a separate letter in the Boomerang folders with more information.
Tests Next Week October 6 - October 10
I was only able to give 4 of the 5 assessments I'd plan to administer. Students took Vocabulary, Comprehension tests, and wrote a narrative based on the story, The Illuminated Adventures of Flora and Ulysses. Students will take a county created Cycle Assessment with a new story.
I wasn't able to give the spelling test. I plan to give it next week, the week of October 27th.
New Cycle
We're beginning a new cycle and learning a new set of skills based on the portion of the book, The Year of the Rat. You can check the Homework tab for the Cycle Summary. It summarizes the spelling, writing, and reading skills for the next two weeks.
iReady Diagnostic Reports
On Monday, October 13, 2025, your child's Fall 2025 iReady BOY reports will be sent home. Please be on the lookout for these reports in your child's backpack. Be sure to ASK them about it! Remember that the BOY assessment only provides BASELINE data for your scholar and gives teachers a better look at what they need to work on with your scholar's to help them grow.
Spring 2025 MCAP Reports
On Monday, October 6, 2025, your child's Spring 2025 MCAP Reports were sent home. All students in grades 4-8 shold have received their reports for Math and ELA and the 6th graders also received a report for MISA.
Hopefully your child shared these reports with you. Accompanied with the score reports were a couple different documents. You may view these documents below:
Understanding the MCAP Score Report ELA & Math (current 4th - 8th grade)
Understanding the MCAP Score Report MISA (current 6th grade)
If your child did not bring a report home, it is because we haven't received their report from their previous school, they came from out of state, OR they did not sit for MCAP last year. Should you have any questions, please reach out to our School Testing Coordinator, Ms. Stefanak.

Apology
Greetings 4th-grade families! I apologize the this week's delayed newsletter. I had too much fun celebrating at a pool party and BBQ this weekend. It was my grandma's 92nd birthday party. We celebrated by counting all the grandkids (25), great-grandkids (35), and great-great-grandbabies (5). A good time was had by all. That means I wasn't able to get one important announcement out in time. I sincerely apologize to the Sigmas if they weren't able to bring their phones to class today. I will use the incentive Technology Hour, for another event.
Read-a-Thon Fundraiser:
This is the last week for the biggest fundraiser of the year. The Sigmas (my homeroom) have already earned $1,321 so far. Thank you so much. This means students have earned a homework pass for this week, 20 minutes of extra recess on Tuesday, October 7th, and Technology Hour this Monday, October 6th. I'm
I've created some incentives just for my homeroom students.
$500 : A Homework Pass ✅ Week of 10/6
$1,000 : 20 minutes of extra recess ✅ Tuesday, 10/7
$1,250 : Technology Hour ✅ Monday, 10/6
There's more to earn.
$1,500 : A movie with snacks
$2,000 : Mrs. Nimmons teaches in costume
September's Monthly Behavior Incentive
Congratulations! Every 4th-grader earned a 65% or better behavior percentage for the month of September. We're celebrating with SPORTS DAY on Friday, October 12th. The PTO covered the cost of 2 soccer goals, soccer balls, basketballs, and enough pom-poms for everyone. We'll spend an extended period outside and play sports. Parents and guardians can see their child's Class Dojo percentage on the back of this week's Homework Checklist.
Parent Teacher Conference Link
It's that time of year again. Parent and Teacher Conference Day is Tuesday, November 11th, Veteran's Day. Teachers are usually able to schedule 20 15-minute conferences on that day. But in order to accomodate more families, Mr. Curtis and I have opted to not meet with parents before and after school for 3 weeks leading up to Conference Day. This way we're able to accommodate up to 37 families.
We're not sharing the link with all families, yet. We're prioritizing the families of students struggling to meet 4th-grade expectations. This is the first round of sign ups. The link will go out to everyone on Friday, October 12th. Please check your email and sign up at your earliest convenience.
Tests Next Week October 6 - October 10
There will be 5 assessments next week, wrapping up all the Cycle 1 skills we've practiced in class.
Monday we will have a 10-question comprehension test based on the first 9 chapters of a book we read in class, The Illuminated Adventures of Flora and Ulysses.
Tuesday students will take a test on the following words from Flora and Ulysses,
Critical Vocabulary: cynic, defiance, profound, inadvertently, consumed, descended, obliged, mundane, considered, disdain
1. cynic: A cynic is someone who always expects bad things to happen.
2. defiance: If you act in defiance, you know something is not allowed, but you do it anyway.

First Spelling Test
I am very proud of how students performed on their first spelling test. Some students earned extra credit for spelling the secret bonus words correctly. I didn't tell families there were bonus words because I want to students to know all 12 words.
I believe when students exceed expectations they should receive credit for it. My curriculum provides a list of 7 spelling words. I add another 5 words but hold students accountable for 3 of those extra words. Every spelling test is graded out of 10. Please refer to the grading list below.
12 out of 12 correct = 120%
any 11 out of 12 correct = 110%
any 10 out of 12 correct = 100%
any 9 out of 12 correct = 90%
any 8 out of 12 correct = 80%
any 7 out of 12 correct = 70%
any 6 out of 12 correct = 60%
any 5 out of 12 correct = 50%
The iReady lessons are the spelling test are the ONLY extra credit opportunities I offer. There are no other opportunities for extra credit.

Chromebook Agreement: Please submit the Chromebook Agreement shared by Ms. Stefanak on Class Dojo. You can access the form here: Chromebook Agreement Form.
Important Note: Scholars without a signed device agreement will not be provided a device until one is received. We only need ONE form per scholar, but a separate form must be filled out for EACH scholar you have here at BDF. The form will send a copy of your responses to the email address you enter when completing it. Please double-check that you aren't sending a second agreement! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out!
Homework: Homework will be begin this week. I'm asking students to fill out a list of favorites so I can get to know them better. In a 5-day week, homework sheets are given to students on Monday and due every Friday. The extended due date, without penalty, will always be the next Tuesday. Parents and guardians can print out the PDF version from the HOMEWORK tab if the paper is lost.
I want to address an issue regarding five students whose last names were misspelled on a list given to the fourth-grade teachers. This has caused some lapses in connecting on Class Dojo. I apologize for this oversight and will work on correcting those names on the folders and name tags this week.
We are grateful for your ongoing support in making this school year a success. Your partnership is invaluable, and together, we can create a nurturing environment for our scholars.
Looking forward to more wonderful moments ahead!

Hello, FOURTH-grade Parents!
I am Mrs. Nimmons, your child’s fourth-grade Reading and Social Studies teacher.
I am very excited to collaborate with each of you this year. One of the reasons I'm so especially excited this year is because for seven families, this will be our second year working together.
Here's a little about myself. I graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park with a degree in Curriculum and Instruction. Since graduating I have taught grades 1st through 6th in several schools in Prince George's County. In 2017, I earned a Master's degree in Instructional Technology.
I continue to improve my professional practice through professional development opportunities from the talent development office. I completed the Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) course and I have served as a mentor teacher with graduate and undergraduate students from Bowie State University. I continue to seek education in Arts Integration and I plan to incorporate art integration lessons throughout the year.
In Reading and Social Studies class, students will read a lot, they will write a lot. They will also draw, dance, sing, create, and make new friends. Your children will have a lot of fun in class this year.
I've had a compulsion to read since I was a little girl. I love to read. My favorite genres are science fiction, speculative fiction, fantasy, narrative nonfiction, poetry, crime fiction, mystery, and literature. I will ask students and families for book recommendations. One of my personal goals is to pass on the practice of losing oneself in a story. I cannot wait to hear about your child(ren)'s favorite stories.
