Self-Love: What It Is & How to Practice It
Valentine’s Day is here and love is in the air. But while you’re thinking about how to show love to others—through gifts, kind words, or time together—have you thought about showing love to yourself? This is called self-love.
What is self-love?
Self-love means appreciating yourself, taking care of your well-being, and treating yourself with kindness and respect. It’s about recognizing your worth and making sure your needs matter, too.
Is self-love important?
Self-love is extremely important. Some people view it as a human necessity. If you don’t love yourself, it’s much harder to love others. Loving yourself helps you build confidence, set healthy boundaries, and form better relationships with others.
How to practice self-love
There are many ways to practice self-love. So, how can you show yourself the same kindness and care that you offer to others? Here are some ways to start:
Be patient with yourself when things don’t go as planned.
Make time for activities that bring you happiness.
Challenge negative self-talk—replace self-criticism with encouragement.
Treat yourself with the same kindness you’d offer a close friend.
Surround yourself with positive people who lift you up.
Keep a journal to reflect on your experiences and growth.
