Mr. Braxton’s Instrumental Music Grading Policy for the 2024-2025 School Year
Instrumental Music is an academic course in which students receive a grade for various aspects of the class. The course is available to all students in fourth grade or higher. Once a student has been enrolled into the course, they must attend all lessons and concerts throughout the entire academic school year. Students are encouraged to not withdraw from the course once they have been enrolled, unless otherwise discussed with Mr. Braxton. Below, please find and review my grading policy for the course.
Assessment is worth 30% of your child’s grade and is dependent on:
● Performances
● Prepared playing tests
● Written assignments
Classwork is worth 60% of your child’s grade and is dependent on:
● Attendance
● Behavior
● Preparedness for class
● Participation and effort in class activities
Independent practice is worth 10% of your child’s grade and is dependent on:
● Accurately completing practice journals
● Quarterly supply checks
● Returning all forms and permission slips before, or on, the due date
● Various assignments including researching, listening, and writing
Students are expected to attend each class with their instruments and other needed materials. Students who do not bring their instruments will sit out of the class for the day. If a student repeatedly forgets their instrument, it may result in their grade being lowered.
Students will receive merits or demerits depending on their performance in each category. Missing a mandatory performance throughout the year will result in the student’s final quarter grade being lowered by a letter grade. Please make sure that your child is in attendance for each mandatory performance.
Although it is the student’s responsibility to be in charge of his or her grades, parental involvement is also extremely beneficial. You can view your child’s grade at any time using the SchoolMax application available through the PGCPS website.
Thank you,
Mr. Karl Braxton
