As the only major championship for professionals, and by professionals, the PGA Championship has evolved into one of the premier sporting events in the world. The first PGA Championship was held in October 1916 at Siwanoy Country Club in Bronxville, New York. The winner, Jim Barnes, received $500 and a diamond-studded gold medal donated by Rodman Wanamaker. For comparison in 2022, winner Justin Thomas was awarded $2,700,000 and took home a smaller-sized replica of the Wanamaker Trophy. The PGA Championship was established for the purpose of providing a high-profile tournament specifically for professional golfers at a time when golf was largely run by wealthy amateurs. This origin is still reflected in the entry system for the Championship as the only major golf event that does not explicitly invite leading amateurs to compete. The PGA Championship is one of four major championships in men’s professional golf. The season’s second major moved to the month of May in 2019 (played in August 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic) and features major championship golf’s only all-professional field. The PGA Championship is an official money event on the PGA Tour, European Tour and Japan Golf Tour and annually features the most top-100 players in the Official World Golf Rankings.
In 2026, the PGA of America returns to Aronimink Golf Club to host its second PGA Championship and first since 1962. Aronimink Golf Club was originally designed by Donald Ross, with renovations in recent years by Gil Hanse. The course opened in 1896 and has since established itself as one of golf's most storied venues, having hosted the 2011 & 2012 AT&T National, 2018 BMW Championship, and 2020 KPMG Women's PGA Championship.
Early in 1916, Rodman Wanamaker, a businessman and golfer, hosted friends and prominent golfers to discuss the formation of a national organization for professional golfers. The meeting resulted in the formation of the PGA of America, and the first tournament for professionals only. In his honor, the Championship named its prestigious award the Wanamaker Trophy. Each year since, the champion is awarded the Wanamaker Trophy, while taking home a smaller-sized replica.
