Kitchener-Waterloo Multicultural Centre
Services for newcomers (immigrants and refugees): settlement services, pre-employment services, we also operate an interpretation and translation agency.
In 1967, a determined group of newcomers to Canada formed the K-W Folk Arts Council and organized the very first Multicultural Festival in Kitchener-Waterloo. Over time, the mandate of that organization expanded to providing support and assistance to newcomers to our community and then later to provide interpretation and translation services to public and private sector clients in the community.
Today, the Centre provides a wide range of services to thousands of clients throughout Waterloo Region (and beyond) …and still hosts one of the biggest Multicultural Festivals in Canada every year. As a non-profit, registered charity, we are grateful for the support of our many funders. The Centre is overseen by a volunteer Board of Directors elected from and by our general membership. LGBTQ+ at the J
At LGBTQ+ at the J there is no right way to be Queer, and no right way to be Jewish; there's certainly no right way to be both. Our programs aim to support diverse, pluralistic, and accessible community at the intersection of LGBTQ+ and Jewish identities and experiences. We bring Queerness into Jewish moments and bring Jewishness into Queer life, striving for spaces where everybody can bring their full self. We both celebrate and amplify LGBTQ+ Jewish people and stories, in recognition of their inherent value.
Staff are all queer and Jewish. Org focuses on community building for LGBTQ+ Jewish people and advocacy to mainstream Jewish institutions about the needs of queer folks.
We offer events / meetups approximately 1-2 times per month. These range from educational, social, skill-building, and more. Many of our events centre around a Jewish holiday or tradition, but we approach these in affirming and empowerment-focused ways that does not assume or require any sort of connection or experience with the ritual. We can also connect with community members to chat about their needs and connect them within the broader Jewish community. (Toronto, On)
