Beginning Band FAQ

WHY SHOULD MY CHILD TAKE BAND?

1. They learn to read music notation.

2. They learn a new form of communication and expression.

3. Students can develop an appreciation of music that lasts throughout life.

4. They learn a team attitude (rather than a "by myself attitude") by working together toward common goals. 

5. Students can improve their self images by mastering a new skill.

6. They can form lasting friendships with other band members as a result of being part of our band "family." 

7. Students can improve their reading skills.

8. Band helps develop self-discipline and confidence.

9. It helps develop eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity.

10. It helps students develop good posture and breathing habits.

11. Most importantly...making music is fun and rewarding! 

CAN MY STUDENT PARTICIAPTE IN BAND IF THEY ARE INVOLVED IN SPORTS, DANCE, CHEER AND OTHER AFTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES?

Yes! Most WMS band students participate in sports, clubs and other activities while they are band members. We ask that students communicate any conflicts at least 48 hours before so we can plan accordingly.

HOW MANY CONCERTS WILL MY CHILD HAVE?

During the 1st year of band, your child will have two concerts. The reason we have two concerts is because we spend the majority of time teaching and mastering the basic skills. The concert activities do increase in later years of participation in the program. 

WHAT INSTRUMENT SHOULD MY CHILD PLAY?

Westview MS staff will work with your student in what is called an “instrument fitting”.  This “fitting” takes into consideration each student’s physical characteristics and coordination, specific skills, AND also the student’s interest and preference to certain instruments – ALL of this helps guide and determine the best instrument choice for your student to succeed in band.

WHAT INSTRUMENTS THAT ARE OFFERED IN BEGINNING BAND?

Flute, Clarinet, Oboe, Bassoon, Alto Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba and Percussion

HOW DO I GET AN INSTRUMENT?

Instruments come in a variety of brands and models with different options and accessories. Once we help your family select which instrument your child will play, we will give you all the information you will need about supplies and guide you through that process. There is some financial commitment associated with playing an instrument, but we have financial aid available for families in need.  Some instruments are owned by WMS, so the cost for the family would only be the rental fee.  Most families choose to rent an instrument from a music store for the first year of instruction, which includes any needed repairs throughout the year. We will make sure that participating in band is never cost-prohibitive for any family. 

*VERY IMPORTANT!!!!  There are also certain school instruments available for students/families with special financial needs.  If this is your situation, please contact band directors – we will help those who indeed want to commit and are truly interested. There is a $75 instrument fee that covers any minor damage and regular maintenance of the instrument.

1. Aprenden a leer notación musical.

¿PUEDE MI ESTUDIANTE PARTICIPAR EN LA BANDA SI ESTÁ INVOLUCRADO EN DEPORTES, BAILE, ANIMACIÓN Y OTRAS ACTIVIDADES DESPUÉS DE LA ESCUELA?

¡Sí! La mayoría de los estudiantes de banda de WMS participan en deportes, clubes y otras actividades mientras son miembros de la banda. Pedimos que los estudiantes comuniquen cualquier conflicto al menos 48 horas antes para que podamos planificar en consecuencia.

¿CUÁNTOS CONCIERTOS TENDRÁ MI HIJO?

Durante el 1er año de banda, su hijo tendrá dos conciertos. La razón por la que tenemos tan pocos conciertos es porque pasamos la mayor parte del tiempo enseñando y dominando las habilidades básicas. Las actividades concertísticas sí aumentan en los años posteriores de participación en el programa.

¿QUÉ INSTRUMENTO DEBERÍA TOCAR MI HIJO?

El personal de Westview MS trabajará con su estudiante en lo que se llama “adaptación de instrumentos”. Esta "adaptación" toma en consideración las características físicas y la coordinación de cada estudiante, sus habilidades específicas y también el interés y la preferencia del estudiante por ciertos instrumentos; TODO esto ayuda a guiar y determinar la mejor elección de instrumento para que su estudiante tenga éxito en la banda.

¿QUÉ INSTRUMENTOS SE OFRECEN EN BANDA PRINCIPIANTE?

¿CÓMO CONSIGO UN INSTRUMENTO?

Los instrumentos vienen en una variedad de marcas y modelos con diferentes opciones y accesorios. Una vez que ayudemos a su familia a seleccionar qué instrumento tocará su hijo, le brindaremos toda la información que necesitará sobre los suministros y lo guiaremos a través de ese proceso. Existe cierto compromiso financiero asociado con tocar un instrumento, pero tenemos ayuda financiera disponible para familias necesitadas. Algunos instrumentos son propiedad de WMS, por lo que el costo para la familia sería sólo el alquiler. La mayoría de las familias optan por alquilar un instrumento en una tienda de música durante el primer año de instrucción, lo que incluye las reparaciones necesarias durante todo el año. Nos aseguraremos de que participar en la banda nunca tenga un costo prohibitivo para ninguna familia.

*¡¡¡¡MUY IMPORTANTE!!!! También hay ciertos instrumentos escolares disponibles para estudiantes/familias con necesidades financieras especiales. Si esta es su situación, comuníquese con los directores de la banda; ayudaremos a aquellos que realmente quieran comprometerse y estén realmente interesados. Hay una tarifa por instrumento de $75 que cubre cualquier daño menor y el mantenimiento regular del instrumento.
