Oct 11- Parent Conferences (No School)
Whew! These 4 days seemed to fly by! It's been so good to see our returning 5th graders and meet our new 4th grade ASCENDers. As we are teaching expectations and procedures, there will be growing pains, but it is going to be worth it. Ms. Hurst and I will share weekly updates and share
Communication
Ms. Hurst and I are still getting used to life apart from Class Dojo, and although we miss it, we have fully embraced PBIS Family app in our classes. If you have any communication that is lengthier, you are welcome to email us. However, anything quick (like reminders or answers to questions), the PBIS Family app is preferred. We will also be sharing links and class messages primarily through PBIS Family, so please make sure you are connected. I will be sending an email to parents using the app, so please check the spam folder by Friday night if you haven't received an email invite.
Adjustment Time
As we've mentioned in our info session and conversations, there is a pretty sharp adjustment to life in ASCEND. Please be aware that your child may feel an increase in stress/ frustration these next couple weeks. We are vigilant in observing how your child is doing in our class and if this is the best fit for them, and will reach out to parents if we may have any concerns about your child's success in ASCEND. The best way you can support your child is to have daily conversations with them about what they did/ enjoyed, anything they felt like was challenging, and helping to brainstorm ways to be successful the next day.
Personality Island
- Students have begun brainstorming their major "personality islands" in preparation for writing an introduction of who they are to the class next week. They will also be creating a visual of their personality islands.
ELAR
- We have introduced literature circles to our 4th graders through the book "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe". Our students have really picked it up well!
Social Studies
- We have started learning about basic geography and map skills. Our focus is learning how to take good notes.
Personality Island
- Students are doing a 5th grade twist on the Personality Island project. They have interviewed another classmate and are creating personality islands on them!
ELAR
- We are reintroducing literature circles with the book "Number the Stars". Our students have picked up right where they left off last year in fine form.
Social Studies
- We have introduced the theme for the year... UTOPIA. As we learn about the various settlements, colonies, and historical events, we will be analyzing pros and cons in order to form their own utopian space colony later on this year. Next week we will be diving into the early colonies of Jamestown, Roanoke, and Virginia.
