Our school district is committed to student achievement and success for every student!
We have amazing teachers and staff who differentiate and support EVERY student including those who are learning English as a second, third, or even fourth language! For students who qualify for EL support, an ELL Specialist will collaborate, support & provide regular classroom teachers with instructional resources. Unlike some school districts, all Pewaukee EL students are mainstreamed.
Some students will need a little extra support. For those students, Mrs. Breitrick will pull them aside and work with them in small groups or one-on-one to provide personalized support.
To serve EL students effectively, the Pewaukee School District follows the EL process below. The only challenge in this process occurs when previous schools do not send or fax students' school records in a timely manner so we appreciate parents' role in facilitating this when coming from another country.
Parent/Guardian completes Home Language Survey (HLS) during
enrollment process.
↓
OFFICE STAFF or COUNSELOR shares the HLS with EL staff
when a language other than English is active.
↓
EL STAFF reviews enrollment forms & cumulative file,
possibly followed by an interview with parents/guardians.
↓
IF STUDENT QUALIFIES, EL staff provides WIDA Screener unless ACCESS
scores are available to share with teaching staff.
↓
EL STAFF communicates with parents/guardians; sends the
EL Permission to Participate Form; AND creates & sends the student's Individualized EL Student Support Plan.
*SIGNATURES ARE REQUIRED
↓
WHEN PARENTS return forms & accept EL student support, EL staff meets with
teaching staff to share the EL Support Plan & classroom support process.
↓
ALL TEACHING STAFF are required to provide evidence
that each EL's language goals are being met via STUDENT UPDATE FORMS.
↓
EL STUDENTS annually participate in the state-mandated language assessment, ACCESS 2.0.
(December & January)
Each spring, scores are shared with parents/guardians, students, & staff.
↓
If an EL student doesn't exit our support program at the end of a school year, a new individualized EL Student Support Plan is created for the following school year, requiring parent/guardian and teaching staff signatures.
If an EL student exits our support program at the end of a school year, attendance & academic performance are monitored for two years.
