My name is Jason Russum, and I have been coaching water polo for 10 years. I began playing competitive water polo when I was 10 years old and played club water polo in San Jose, where I competed at the highest levels of Junior Olympics. I also had the opportunity to play competitively with select groups in Spain and Puerto Rico, played four years in college, and have remained active in the water polo community as a coach.
I have coached in San Jose, San Diego, and now in Petaluma as the high school coach. I am also one of the head coaches of North Bay Water Polo, located in Santa Rosa.
My goal is to grow the sport of water polo at Petaluma High School and help develop a year-round water polo program in Sonoma County. Ultimately, I want to help build a strong, competitive high school team while creating a positive environment for athletes to learn, improve, and enjoy the sport.
Water polo is phenomenal exercise. It teaches unique movement in the water, builds unmatched cardio and conditioning, and develops strength, toughness, teamwork, and discipline. While it is a physical and demanding sport, it is also a high-IQ game. Athletes who are active learners, strong listeners, and willing to work hard can become very successful water polo players.
