Students taking this as a GCSE at KS4 visit places like Borough Market, Billingsgate Market & Smithfield Market as well as artisan bakers and city farms.

Food Preparation & Nutrition

Food preparation and nutrition is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject which develops creativity and imagination.

In year 7 students develop the knowledge, skills and understanding by learning about the importance of healthy eating.  

Practical work includes:

  • knife skills

  • using the hob & oven

  • rubbing in & creaming methods in baking

  • sensory testing

  • making things like crumble, mac & cheese, scones, ragu, Mediterranean tart

We have TWO fully equipped catering kitchens for Food Technology and many students go on to study Food & Nutrition in our Sixth Form too. At Key Stage 4 students This specification in food preparation and nutrition enables learners to make connections between theory and practice so that they are able to apply their understanding of food science and nutrition to practical cooking. This content relates to the study of both food and drinks.

Design Technology

KS3 DT lessons include a variety of creative and practical activities, all aimed at giving pupils the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in the designing and making process.

In year 7 students will design and make a Blockbot and a scrap monster. The blockbot will be made from pine wood and manufactured using a range of tools and machinery, and the scrap monster is made from upcycled clothing.

In year 8 students go on to make wind chime and a Pencil Box!
