Assessing standards in PBL units focuses on evaluating students’ understanding and application of the academic content required by the project. Here’s how to effectively assess standards:
1. Align Assessments with Standards
Clearly identify the standards the project addresses.
Ensure every task, activity, and deliverable connects directly to these standards.
Design a 2-Point Rubric aligned with standards & Use throughout the project
2. Use Formative Assessments
Include checkpoints to measure progress toward mastering the standards.
Use quick assessments like quizzes, discussions, or written responses tied to the standards to monitor understanding throughout the project.
3. Incorporate Performance-Based Tasks
Design project deliverables that require students to demonstrate their mastery of the standards, such as solving a math problem, writing a research-based essay, or creating a scientific model.
4. Develop Standards-Based Rubrics
Create rubrics specifically focused on the standards, with clear criteria for how content knowledge will be assessed.
Use descriptors for each level of performance (e.g., advanced, proficient, developing) tied directly to the expectations of the standards.
5. Assess the Final Product for Standards Mastery
Evaluate the final project deliverable by analyzing how well it demonstrates understanding and application of the targeted standards.
