CTE ADVANCED STUDIES: This culminating course is for juniors and seniors who have earned two technical credits, one of which is a completer course, in one Career Pathway. The Advanced Studies course must augment the content of the completer course and prepare students for success in transitioning to postsecondary education and future careers. Students work under the guidance of a teacher with expertise in the content of the completer course in collaboration with community members, business representatives, and other school-based personnel. The four parts of the course include writing a research paper, producing a product, developing a portfolio, and delivering a presentation. Students demonstrate their abilities to use 21st century skills. Competitive events, community service, and leadership activities provide the opportunity to apply essential standards and workplace readiness skills through authentic experiences. Prerequisite: Two technical credits in one Pathway, one of which is a completer course. (One credit) * Grade Level: 11/12.
CTE INTERNSHIP: A CTE Internship allows for additional development of career and technical competencies within a general career field. Internships allow students to observe and participate in daily operations, develop direct contact with job personnel, ask questions about particular careers, and perform certain job tasks. This activity is exploratory and allows the student to get hands-on experience in a number of related activities. The teacher, student, and the business community jointly plan the organization, implementation, and evaluation of an internship, regardless of whether it is an unpaid or paid internship. AGRISCIENCE APPLICATIONS: This course focuses on integrating biological/physical sciences with technology as related to the environment, natural resources, food production, science, and agribusiness. Topics of instruction include agricultural awareness and literacy, employability skills and introduction to all aspects of the total agricultural industry. English language arts, mathematics, and science are reinforced. Prerequisite: None . (One credit) *Recommended for grade (9).
AGRICULTURAL MECHANICS I: This course develops knowledge and technical skills in the broad field of agricultural machinery, equipment, and structures. The primary purpose of this course is to prepare students to handle the day-to-day problems and repair needs they will encounter in their chosen agricultural career. Topics include agricultural mechanics safety, agricultural engineering career opportunities, hand/power tool use and selection, electrical wiring, fencing, paints and preservatives, basic metal working, basic agricultural construction skills related to plumbing, carpentry, basic welding, and leadership development. English language arts, mathematics, and science are reinforced. Prerequisite: None. AGRICULTURAL MECHANICS II HONORS: In this course, the topics of instruction emphasized are non-metallic agricultural fabrication techniques, metal fabrication technology, safe tool and equipment use, human resource development, hot/cold metal working skills and technology, advanced welding and metal cutting skills, working with plastics, plumbing, concrete and masonry, agricultural power and advanced career exploration/decision making. English language arts, mathematics, and science are reinforced. Prerequisite: Agricultural Mechanics I. NATURAL RESOURCES I: This course provides an introduction to environmental studies, which includes topics of instruction in renewable and non-renewable natural resources, history of the environment, personal development, water and air quality, waste management, land use regulations, soils, meteorology, fisheries, forestry, and wildlife habitat. English language arts, mathematics, and science are reinforced. Prerequisite: None. NATURAL RESOURCES II: This course covers instruction in best management practices in methods of environmental monitoring and conservation, air and water regulations, sampling methodologies, prescribing conservation techniques, and wildlife and forestry management. English language arts, mathematics, and science are reinforced. Prerequisite: Natural Resources I. CTE CAREER & COLLEGE PROMISE - (PCC) - AGRIBUSINESS TECHNOLOGY: Students will learn the fundamentals of agriculture, with emphasis placed on plant science in the areas of production, weed control, and pest management. As well as, the basics of our economic system and government policies and programs relating to agriculture. CARPENTRY II HONORS: Engage in procedures for laying out, constructing, and installing roofing components for residential and commercial buildings. Practice skills related to moisture and insulation control concepts for building envelop systems installation. Participate in exterior finish materials installation procedures. DRAFTING I HONORS: Investigate essential concepts, trends, and career options in the architectural and engineering industry. Practice fundamental sketching skills and techniques required in architectural and engineering graphic communications. Perform CAD (computer aided drafting/design) procedures required to produce basic technical drawings. DRAFTING II ARCHITECTURAL HONORS: Investigate commonly accepted styles, trends, trade terminology, and career options found in the architectural industry. Practice procedures to plan and draw a single-floor residential floor plan using CAD (computer aided drafting/design). Engage in the design of foundation, roof, and floor system to create a complete set of residential construction documents. DRAFTING III ARCHITECTURAL HONORS: Practice procedures to create a multi-floor residential structure using CAD (computer aided drafting/design). Engage in the design of electrical systems, stair/railing, and advanced kitchen and bath details used in residential architectural planning. Engage in the development of a site plan for a residential structure. Gain the knowledge and skills for careers in architecture and construction. ELECTRICAL TRADES I HONORS: Develop a working knowledge of basic electrical theory, Ohm’s law, and methods for calculating electrical energy. Utilize the National Electric Code (NEC) to find installation requirements. Engage in basic skills required for installation of electrical device boxes, conduit, and raceways systems. ELECTRICAL TRADES II HONORS: Develop a working knowledge of skills required to read and interpret electrical construction drawings and specifications. ELECTRICAL TRADES III HONORS: Practice the techniques required to make conduit bends and to install pull and junction boxes. Engage in a cable pulling operation including conductor installation and cable end preparation. Develop a working knowledge of the operation of circuit breakers, fuses, contactors, and relays used in electrical systems. CTE CAREER & COLLEGE PROMISE – (PCC) - WELDING TECHNOLOGY: The Production (welding) pathway provides a sound understanding of the science, technology, and applications essential for the welding and metal industry. Instruction includes consumable and non-consumable electrode welding and cutting processes. Courses in symbols and specifications, shield metal arc welding, MIG and TIG welding, and fabrication. Destructive and non-destructive testing provides the student with industry-standard skills developed through classroom training and practical application. BUSINESS ESSENTIALS: Explore realistic business principles by examining the business environment and primary business activities. PHARMACY TECHNICIAN HONORS: This course has face-to-face and self-paced, online instruction designed to prepare high school seniors for a pharmacy technician career. Topics included in this course are federal law, medication used in major body systems, calculations, and pharmacy operations. Mathematics is reinforced in this course. CTE CAREER & COLLEGE PROMISE – (PCC) - MEDICAL ASSISTING: The Medical assisting pathway introduces administrative, clinical and laboratory procedures of health care professions. Coursework includes medical terminology, computer operations, assisting with examinations and treatment, and ethical and legal issues associated with patient care. CTE CAREER & COLLEGE PROMISE – (PCC) - NURSE AIDE (CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT/CNA): The Nurse Aide course prepares individuals to work under the supervision of licensed nursing professionals in performing nursing care and services for persons of all ages. Topics include growth and development, personal care, vital signs, communication, nutrition, medical asepsis, therapeutic activities, accident and fire safety, household environment and equipment management, family resources and services, and employment skills. Upon completion, the student may be eligible to sit for the NC Nurse Aide exam to achieve the CNA certification. CTE CAREER & COLLEGE PROMISE - (PCC)- EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY/EMT: This course introduces basic emergency medical care. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to sit for North Carolina State or National Registry EMT certification. PRINCIPLES OF FAMILY & HUMAN SERVICES: Students learn life literacy skills and individual, family, and community systems in the context of the human services field. FOOD & NUTRITION I: Formulate an understanding of nutrition for a healthy lifestyle by preparing foods in each food group. Develop kitchen skills that promote proper food handling practice. FOOD & NUTRITION II: In this course, students experience the cross-section of nutrition science and food preparation while building skills for an expanding range of career opportunities. APPAREL AND TEXTILE PRODUCTION I: In this course students are introduced to the apparel and textile industry in the area of design, textiles and apparel engineering. APPAREL AND TEXTILE PRODUCTION II: Design apparel utilizing the design process. Implement advanced sewing skills to engineer an apparel product. Simulate marketing and business experience to explore the apparel industry. CTE CAREER & COLLEGE PROMISE – (PCC) - COSMETOLOGY: This pathway is designed to provide competency based knowledge, scientific/artistic principles, and hands on fundamentals associated with the cosmetology industry. The pathway provides a simulated salon environment which enables students to develop manipulative skills. Coursework includes instruction in all phases of the professional imagining, hair design, chemical processes, skin care, multi-cultural practices, business principles, and product knowledge. Cosmetology I, II, III, & IV each meet two periods and earn two credits per course. (credits vary based on courses taken) Grade levels 11-12. *Students must meet CCP guidelines for enrollment.
CTE CAREER & COLLEGE PROMISE – (PCC) - EARLY CHILDHOOD: The Early Childhood Development pathway prepares individuals to work with children from infancy through middle childhood in diverse learning environments. Coursework includes child growth and development; physical/nutritional needs of children; care and guidance of children; and communication skills with parents and children. Students will identify activities and employ strategies that foster the cognitive/language, physical/motor, social/emotional, and creative development of young children. Students will be able to plan and implement developmentally appropriate activities for young children. CTE CAREER & COLLEGE PROMISE - (PCC) - HUMAN SERVICES: The Human Services Technology curriculum prepares students for entry-level positions in institutions and agencies which provide social, community, and educational services. Along with core courses, students take courses which prepare them for specialization in specific human service areas such social services, mental health, rehabilitation, corrections or gerontology. INTRO TO COMPUTER SCIENCE: Explore components of computation, programming, ethics, and variables in computer science. Utilize Microsoft’s MakeCode block-based coding environment and micro:bit micro controller board to develop simple apps. Build programming skills in block-based JavaScript programming. Gain the skills and knowledge for careers in the Computer Science, IT, and Technology pathways. Prerequisite: None. (One credit) *Recommended grade level 9.
PYTHON PROGRAMMING I: This course is designed to introduce Python as a beginning course (not intended for experienced programmers). The course is designed for students to learn and practice coding in an online environment that requires only a modern web browser and Internet connection. No special software is required to complete this course. The course includes video content, practice labs, and coding projects. Mathematics is reinforced. Recommended prerequisite: Intro to Computer Science (One credit) *Recommended grade levels 9-10.
PYTHON PROGRAMMING II HONORS: This course will prepare students for jobs and careers connected with widely understood software development, which includes not only creating the code itself as a junior developer, but also computer systems design and software testing. Students will be guided to a level of Python programming knowledge which will allow them to design, write, debug, and run programs encoded in the Python language, and to understand the basic concepts of software development technology. In addition, students will learn IoT (Internet of Things) skills which can help transform any business in any industry, from manufacturing to saving endangered species. Students will apply basic programming (using Python) to support IoT devices. This course will prepare students for taking the PCAP: Certified Associate in Python Programming certification exam. Associate certification scaffolds to certification as a Certified Expert in Python Programming. Prerequisite: Python Programming I (One credit) *Recommended grade levels 10-11.
AP COMPUTER SCIENCE: The AP Computer Science course is designed to assist students in the development of computational thinking skills critical for success across all disciplines. Students are encouraged to apply creative processes when developing computational artifacts and to think creatively while using computer software and other technology to explore questions that interest them. They will also develop effective communication and collaborative skills, working individually and collaboratively to solve problems, and discussing and writing about the importance of these problems and the impacts to their community, society and the world. ADOBE VISUAL DESIGN I: Build logos and vector images using features in Adobe Illustrator. Enhance photographs using features in Adobe Photoshop. Produce images to be used in business publications and communications. Gain knowledge and skills for careers in the Adobe Academy pathway. Prerequisite: None. ADOBE VIDEO I: Discover the legal, technical, and editorial principles employed in the video industry necessary to understand ethical implications before engaging in a film project. Work collaboratively to conceive, plan, and execute production plans to create audio and video assets. Use Adobe Premiere Pro features to edit audio and video clips to create and publish a range of video products. Gain the knowledge, skills, and credentials necessary for career possibilities in the Adobe Video Design pathway. Prerequisite: None. (One credit) *Recommended grade levels 11-12.
CTE CAREER & COLLEGE PROMISE – (PCC) - INFO TECH - Gaming: The Computer Technology Integration (CTI) curriculum in Gaming prepares students for employment as designers, testers, support technicians, administrators, developers, or programmers with organizations that use computers to design, process, manage, and communicate information, depending on the technical path selected within this curriculum. Course work will develop a student's ability to communicate complex technical issues related to gaming software and programming in a manner that computer users can understand. Course work will develop a student's ability to communicate complex technical issues related to computer hardware, software, and networks in a manner that computer users can understand. CTE CAREER & COLLEGE PROMISE – (PCC) - CRIMINAL JUSTICE: The Criminal Justice pathways are designed to provide knowledge of criminal justice systems and operations. The pathways will focus on local, state, and federal law enforcement, judicial processes, and corrections. The criminal justice system’s role within society will be explored. Emphasis is on criminal justice systems, criminology, juvenile justice, criminal al and constitutional law, investigative principles, ethics, and community relations. No prerequisite/testing. CTE CAREER & COLLEGE PROMISE – (PCC) - FIRE SAFETY: Piedmont Community College’s advanced specialized training program for Fire Professionals offers a wide variety of training and learning opportunities for our community’s public and private sector fire service professionals. CPT is recognized by manufacturers all over NC and the USA as a fundamental certification needed by advanced manufacturing production workers. TEACHER CADET I (Honors): The North Carolina Teacher Cadet Program is designed to provide the opportunity for high school students considering the field of education with an introduction to the careers involved. Cadets will study physical, emotional, cognitive, social, and moral development for children ages birth-eighteen. Cadets will be introduced to Special Education and English Language Learner programs. They will begin their study of pedagogy and methods. Finally, the TC I Cadets will survey different educational settings and styles. TEACHER CADET II (Honors): Cadets will continue their study of pedagogy and methods. They will be exposed to alternatives to public education, educational research, and current best practices. The Cadet II students will complete lengthy student teaching field experiences, as well as fulfill requirements to teach TC I materials. The Cadets will complete both a major thesis paper and an action research project. Finally, the culminating project synthesizes both years of the course into a requirement to use research, experiences, and cooperative pairs to create a school. ENGLISH IV: English IV completes the global perspective initiated in English II. Creative Writing: This course focuses on every stage of the writing process, including brainstorming topics, revising, and providing constructive feedback to peers. BAND - BEGINNER (YEARLONG): A fall course for freshmen musicians or students looking to change instruments to increase their musicianship. Students enrolled in this course will begin learning the building blocks of musical knowledge and then continue to advance throughout the school year in their musical literacy. The grading procedure for this course consists of weekly/biweekly unit formative assessments, two-quarter summative assessments, and a final exam each semester. Students enrolled will also showcase their progress by performing at the Winter and Spring concert, which will be 50% of their final exam grade. Only students who show mastery at the end-or-year exam will advance to the next level, Marching Band (Intermediate/Proficient).
BAND - MARCHING (YEARLONG): A continuation from middle school band-this fall course is a progressional step to achieving musicianship. High school students who wish to be a member of The Person Paradigm must have 2-years of middle school band experience and have completed both June and August Band Camp, which requires 100% commitment in attendance. Requirements for students enrolled include performing at various events (home football games, competitions, parades, pep rallies, and the Winter Concert). In addition, students will receive grades for their attendance and active participation in after-school rehearsals and all required events. Furthermore, daily performance grades will be given to students while in the course. Prerequisite: Completion of Band - Beginning or teacher recommendation. Application required. Students will express their ideas, observations and emotion through the use of multi-media experiences through the visual language of color, texture, value, line, space, shape and form. VISUAL ARTS - INTERMEDIATE: This course emphasizes the Principles of Design. Study includes basic color theory, design principles and elements of art in drawing and painting. VISUAL ARTS - PROFICIENT (HONORS): This course is for students who wish to continue their academic study and/or find art-related employment after high school graduation. Students will actively work on projects that respond to artistic problems. Allowing them to generate artwork that expresses their personal style and aesthetic. DIGITAL DRAWING (HONORS): This course is for students who wish to continue their academic study and/or find art related employment after high school graduation. Students will work with Ipads and computers using programs such as Procreate Autodesk Sketchbook, and Krita to become familiar with the new and growing world of Digital Creation. Students will create reflective portfolios and learning journals using the language of visual arts to communicate about the processes and products. Prerequisite: Students must have achieved and can demonstrate the mastery of Intermediate level High School Visual Arts Standards. (One credit) (10-12)
THEATER ARTS - BEGINNING: This course is designed as a survey of the fundamentals of theatre: acting techniques, improvisation, terminology, and the history and philosophy of theatre. There will be some play production. Topics include the relationship between theater and society (historical and contemporary), dramatic structure, theatrical representation, and the crafts of theater artists such as directors, designers, playwrights, and actors. We will also engage with live performances and video archives of past performances. Inherent in this process is the development of self-discipline and greater self-confidence. (One credit) (9-12)
THEATER ARTS - INTERMEDIATE: This course introduces the craft of acting and the foundation for performance. The course consists of group exercises to develop physical awareness, concentration, imagination, and trust. Basic physical, vocal, and analytical concepts; methods; vocabulary; and discipline required of the beginning actor will also be explored. Students will develop personalized creative processes through monologues, scene work, and exercises in observational awareness. Participation in all scheduled rehearsals and performances is required. Prerequisite: Mastery in beginner level High School Theater Arts Standards. (One credit) (9-12).
THEATER ARTS - PROFICIENT (HONORS): In this course students apply acting, directing, playwriting, and production skills developed in previous theatre training. Students produce polished and complex works for an audience. Additional acting styles are introduced and developed. Participating in after-school rehearsals and performances is expected. PERSONAL FITNESS I: Personal fitness addresses a variety of topics related to health and physical fitness that educates students on the benefits of pursuing a healthy, wellness-oriented lifestyle. PERSONAL FITNESS II: This course continues addressing personal fitness within a variety of topics related to health and physical fitness that educates students on the benefits of pursuing a healthy, wellness-oriented lifestyle. Students will continue to assess their own health and fitness level, and make adjustments to their personal fitness program when needed. Students will use a wide range of fitness and wellness activities to improve components of health-related fitness. STRENGTH/WEIGHT TRAINING: Beginning : This course is designed for the novice strength/weight training student. Beginning strength/weight training introduces proper form and techniques, while educating students on safety precautions and injury prevention. Students will develop a personal strength program to enhance their overall muscle tone and endurance. An athlete section is recommended for those participating in a sport. STRENGTH/WEIGHT TRAINING: Intermediate : This course is designed to improve muscular strength, power, and endurance through progressive strength/weight training techniques. Students will refine their personal strength program with more in depth knowledge of the principles of muscular strength and conditioning, while maintaining proper form and safety precautions. An athlete section is recommended for those participating in a sport. JROTC I (YEARLONG): JROTC is designed to teach high school students the value of citizenship, leadership, service to the community, personal responsibility and discipline. Leadership theory & application, foundations for success, communication/study skills, military customs and courtesies, physical training, drill, map reading, and the history/objectives of ROTC are covered. Community service is an integral part of the Army JROTC program and cadets will be expected to praticipate in events outside the classroom. Cadets are required to wear the Army JROTC uniform once a week and conform to appearance standards while in uniform. (Two credits) (9-11)
JROTC II (YEARLONG): This course focuses on Wellness, Fitness & First Aid, nutrition, and prevention of substance abuse. It also covers ethical values, oral and written communication skills, technology applications, and Citizenship in American History and Government. Cadets must wear their uniforms weekly, answering to higher standards of detail and grooming than in the previous year. P.E. is included as part of class each week. JROTC III (YEARLONG): The purpose of this course is to prepare cadets to be leaders. The course covers leadership strategies, presentation skills, conflict management, career planning, social responsibility, financial planning and choices of citizens. Higher standards are expected, with time given to cadet leadership and teaching practice. Prerequisite: Completion of JROTC II (Two credits) (11-12)
JROTC IV (YEARLONG): The main objective of ROTC IV cadets is to refine leadership skills by assisting the instructors whenever needed. This assistance includes teaching an occasional class, leading and teaching drill-and-ceremonies, physical training and inspecting ROTC I’s or ROTC II's in uniform. Some academic work and tests are also assigned. Prerequisite: Recommendation by the instructor and completion of JROTC III. (Two credits) (11-12)
JROTC V Cadet Teacher Assistant: Assist instructor in the LET level class assigned. Assist instructor in drill, physical training, and inspections with a requirement to teach a minimum of one class for each subject taught. Emphasis is on proper teaching methods and preparation of lesson plans. Normally assumes the leadership positions and responsibilities of command functions with continued practical work in drill and technology awareness. Prerequisite: Recommendation by the instructor and completion of JROTC IV. (11-12)
FOUNDATIONS OF MATH I: The purpose of this course is to formalize and extend the mathematics that students learned in the middle grades. In conjunction with Math I, this course provides students the opportunity to study concepts of algebra, geometry, functions, number and operations, statistics and modeling. This course is paced such that students can master the concepts of Math I before moving to the next concept. This course is designed to be taken in the fall semester before Math I and must be paired with Math I during the spring semester to continue the course of study. (One credit) (9)
MATH I: This course provides students the opportunity to study concepts of algebra, geometry, functions, number and operations, statistics and modeling (implemented throughout). These concepts include expressions in the real number system, creating and reasoning with equations and inequalities, interpreting and building simple functions, expressing geometric properties and interpreting categorical and quantitative data. MATH II Honors: This course is a more rigorous version of the Math II curriculum and is designed for the highly motivated student who will commit extensive time and energy to projects and problem solving. MATH IV: The primary focus of this course is on functions and statistical thinking, continuing the study of algebra, functions, trigonometry and statistical concepts previously experienced in NC Math 1-3. The course is designed to be a capstone to introductory statistical concepts. Additionally, the course intentionally integrates concepts from algebra and functions to demonstrate the close relationship between algebraic reasoning as applied to the characteristics and behaviors of more complex functions. In many cases, undergraduate students majoring in non-STEM fields will take an entry-level Algebra or Introductory Statistics course. Students will be prepared for college level algebra and statistics or as a bridge to prepare students for Precalculus or other advanced math courses. DISCRETE MATHEMATICS for COMPUTER SCIENCE: The purpose of this course is to introduce discrete structures that are the backbone of computer science. Discrete mathematics is the study of mathematical structures that are countable or otherwise distinct and separable. The mathematics of modern computer science is built almost entirely on discrete mathematics, such as logic, combinatorics, proof, and graph theory. At most universities, an undergraduate-level course in discrete mathematics is required for students who plan to pursue careers as computer programmers, software engineers, data scientists, security analysts and financial analysts. PRE-CALCULUS HONORS : The purpose of Precalculus is to build upon the study of algebra, functions, and trigonometry experienced in previous high school mathematics courses. This course will build on students’ algebraic skills and understanding of functions to delve into real world phenomena and to deepen understanding of the functions in the course. This course is designed for students pursuing careers in STEM-related fields. Students will be prepared for Calculus, AP Calculus and any entry-level college course. AP US History: In AP U.S. History, students investigate significant events, individuals, developments, and processes in nine historical periods from approximately 1491 to the present. Students develop and use the same skills and methods employed by historians:
Analyzing primary and secondary sources
Developing historical arguments
Making historical connections
Utilizing reasoning about comparison, causation, and continuity and change
The course also provides eight themes the students explore throughout the course in order to make connections among historical developments in different times and places: American and National Identity, Work, Exchange, and Technology, Geography and the Environment, Migration and Settlement, Politics and Power, America in the World, American and Regional Culture, Social Structures. AP UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS: This course introduces students to key political ideas, institutions, policies, interactions, roles, and behaviors that characterize the political culture of the United States. The course examines politically significant concepts and themes, through which students learn to apply disciplinary reasoning, assess causes and consequences of political events, and interpret data to develop evidence-based arguments. The course will help prepare students for careers in the public sector. Those students interested in law, politics, education, history, social work, business, entrepreneurship, journalism, government administration, and countless other careers would benefit from this course. FRENCH I: This course is an introduction to the study of the target language and its culture. Students perform the most basic function of the language and become familiar with some elements of its culture. Emphasis is placed on listening, speaking, reading and writing within a given context extending outside of the classroom setting when possible. FRENCH II: This course provides students with opportunities to continue the development of their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Focus is placed on understanding main ideas and simple text and composing and participating in short conversations orally and in writing. Students develop a better understanding of the similarities and differences between cultures and languages and they examine the influence of the beliefs and values on the target culture. Class will be taught primarily in the target language. Recommendation: C or better in French I. (One credit) (10-12)

Students satisfy limited communication and social interaction demands, as well as initiate and maintain face to face communication. Students continue to refine their knowledge and understanding of the target language and culture(s) and their own by examining the interrelationship of other cultures to their own, by demonstrating behaviors appropriate in target cultures. This course will be taught entirely in the target language. Recommendation: C or better in French II. (One credit) (10-12)
FRENCH IV HONORS: A major focus of this course is to enable students to communicate in writing and in extended conversations on a variety of topics. There is more in-depth study of the target culture and its influence throughout the world. Students are able to connect the target language and compare it to their own. The course will be taught entirely in the target language. Recommendation: Successful completion of French III with a B or higher. (One credit) (11-12)
SPANISH I: This course is an introduction to the study of the target language and its culture. Students perform the most basic function of the language and become familiar with some elements of its culture. Emphasis is placed on listening, speaking, reading and writing within a given context extending outside of the classroom setting when possible. Students acquire some insight into how languages and cultures work by comparing the Spanish language to their own. (One credit) (9-12)

AP SPANISH: The AP Spanish Language and Culture course emphasizes communication (understanding and being understood by others) by applying the interpersonal and interpretive modes of communication in real-life situations. This includes vocabulary usage, language control, communication strategies, and cultural awareness. The AP Spanish Language and Culture course strives not to overemphasize grammatical accuracy at the expense of communication. To best facilitate the study of language and culture, the course is taught almost exclusively in Spanish. The AP Spanish Language and Culture course engages students in an exploration of culture in both contemporary and historical contexts. The course develops students' awareness and appreciation of cultural products (e.g., tools, books, music, laws, conventions, institutions); practices (patterns of social interactions within a culture); and perspectives (values, attitudes, and assumptions).
