Southport High School LMC: Come As You Are
Featured below are some example successful library collaborations to help give you an idea of the variety of things we do in the library. Reach out to Ms. Kohne with an idea for a collaboration. She'd love to work with you! Teachers, explore the library services menu for information about how your school library can serve you.
English 10 Research and Argument Escape Room
Students in several teachers' English 10B classes came to the library to demonstrate their research and argument writing skills by participating in an escape room where their teacher accused them of plagiarism. It was their mission to solve the puzzles and prove their innocence. Students were quite successful at exonerating themselves!
Cultures of Southport Event
Teachers of English learners, the school librarian, and others joined forces to celebrate students' cultural and linguistic differences with a week long cultural event in April. Students showcased aspects of their home cultures by reading original poetry, making homemade soccer balls, playing cultural games, giving presentations about their home cultures, performing cultural dances and songs, participating in activities using giant maps, making and sampling foods from around the world, and more! We love our diverse student population!
World of Evolution Project
This project was completed as a library collaboration with Mrs. Schnepp's and Mrs. Gearhart's Honors Biology classes. During their study of evolution, students read Aimee Nezhukamatathil's World of Wonders. In her book, Nezhukamatathil devotes each chapter to a different organism and uses elements of memoir and informational writing to tell the story of her personal connection with the organism and teach about it at the same time. To wrap up their study of evolution, students each wrote a chapter in a class book where they selected an organism and discussed their personal connection with the organism as well as explained evolutionary processes of the organism, much in the spirit of Nezhukamatathil's book. Student writing was beautiful and meaningful.
Bi-Annual Open Mic in the Library
Mrs. Stanley and Ms. Kohne teamed up to create the Bi-Annual Open Mic in the LMC as an effort to give students a place to highlight their singing, speaking, and dancing talents. The first one was a huge success! We are looking forward to more in the future. Our students are so talented!
Reimagining Hispanic Art Project
It was such an honor to help Mrs. Johnson and her Spanish 2 students with their reimagining Hispanic art project. For this project, students researched a notable Hispanic artist for the purpose of learning about the artist for an oral interview in class where they took on the persona of the artist and were interviewed in Spanish. Then students were challenged with recreating a piece of art from their chosen artist adding their own personal touch while keeping the integrity of the original. Students' artwork was inspiring and beautiful!
Great work, Cards!
Frederick Douglass Day: Transcription and Cake Baking
Mrs. Jordan's Nutrition class, Mr. Hall's English 11, and Ms. Kohne in the library collaborated with Mrs. Smith in Technology to celebrate Frederick Douglass's Birthday. Like many slaves, Frederick Douglass was unsure of his exact birthday, so he chose to celebrate it on February 14th. In honor of Frederick Douglass's birthday, the Library of Congress celebrates every year by providing students across the country with historical documents to transcribe. Students in 11th grade English performed the transcription. Nutrition students helped us celebrate by baking cakes in honor of Douglass's birthday using recipes from the time period. All parties met up iPass to indulge in the sweet treats which featured much molasses and ginger! Yum!
