In gateway to technology Design & Medical, we cover two units in our semester course. The first unit is Medical Detectives and the second unit is Design and Modeling.

In the Medical Detective portion of the class, students play the role of real-life medical detectives as they collect and analyze medical data to diagnose disease. They solve medical mysteries through hands-on projects and labs, measure and interpret vital signs, examine nervous system structure and function, investigate disease outbreaks, and explore how a breakdown within the human body can lead to dysfunction. 

The purpose of the Design and Modeling unit is to introduce the student to the engineering design process.  Students will create foot orthoses from scratch, while also designing different toys that can be 3D printed in the classroom. They will learn how to read and utilize a caliper for measurement, while understanding the importance of accuracy and labels. In all of these processes, the students will also be able to create orthographic and isometric drawings of their structures.

This course will allow students to transition into the Med Tech program for the medical side of the class. Students interested in the design aspect could transition to the Pre-Engineering programs offered at Perry High School. In both modules of the class, an emphasis is put on problem solving and teamwork.
