7-Step Assessment Process

Step 1: Identify the assignment.

• Refer to the assessment plan, also found on the Meaning page.

Step 2: Prepare to collect the direct and indirect data.

• When using Portfolium for direct data, complete steps 3-6.

• For indirect data, there are several options:

  • • Qualtrics for surveys. (For survey policies, please check: Provost's survey policy page)

    • Focus Group

    • Reflective essay

    • Student interview

• If desired at this point, refer to the Integrity page on your assessment site for your ASAR template.

Reminder: 

• Direct data is evidence gathered from a performance-based observation or sampling of student work. Example: using a rubric to evaluate the quality of student papers. 

• Indirect data is evidence that assesses the perceptions of students or faculty. Example: using a survey to assess how students perceive the quality of your discipline’s writing curriculum.

• Indirect evidence is often used to help support your direct evidence findings.

• Authentic evidence refers to assessment which measures a student's ability to apply his or her knowledge in real world applications and involves having experts outside the University evaluating the student's knowledge--as in an internship--rather than using an academic construct such as a test.

Step 3: Request to set up an assignment in Portfolium.

• In order for us to set up the assignment in Portfolium, email the senior coordinator of assessment with the following information:

• • • Course number

    • Section number

    • Semester course is held

    • Assignment title

    • Name of person/people who need access to score the assignment in Portfolium

    • The student artifacts (to be uploaded)

Step 4: Score the assignments.

• To access and score the assignments in Portfolium, follow this tutorial guide.

Step 5: Get your data report. 

• As soon as you have scored the artifacts, email the senior coordinator of assessment letting her know you are ready for the data report from Portfolium. Once it's available, we'll also link your data report here. 

Step 6: Complete the ASAR.

• Once you have received the data, you can start writing the ASAR found on your Integrity page.

Step 7: Let us know you're finished!

• When you finish the ASAR, inform the senior coordinator of assessment.

Congratulations, you are done!

Frequently Asked Questions

When are ASARs due? 

ASARs are due on May 15 every year. 

My assessment plan and/or assessment maps need to be updated. What do I do?

Send the senior coordinator of assessment your needed updates, and she will update your plan and maps for you. If you'd like to make the updates in the Google Sheet yourself, she can also give you access to the sheet.
