GSEP Water Cooler

The water cooler effect: the idea that important information about job success is shared around the water cooler rather than in structured trainings.

Purpose

Welcome to the GSEP Water Cooler, a hub that supports doctoral students at Pepperdine University’s Graduate School of Education and Psychology. Like the informal yet invaluable conversations around a water cooler at work, this platform gathers the best tips, resources, and tools to help you navigate your PhD or EdD journey. Whether seeking practical advice, theoretical frameworks, or community support, GSEP Water Cooler is here to make your academic experience more manageable and collaborative.

If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. --African Proverb

Where do we Even start?

Each tab at the top of the landing page hosts a variety of resources for incoming, current, and post docoratal students - from theories and models to practical dissertation advice. The goal of this ongoing project is to create a hub for information sharing, best practices, FAQs, etc. that students can have bookmarked.

If you are a student at Pepperdine and want to contribute, please reach out via the contact form with your contributions!

Our team of nine GSEP PhD students collaboratively built a website to embody our collective exploration of Cognition, Metacognition, and Critical Learning as we help each other circumnavigate our dissertation journey. Curated tabs were created to address the essential components of cognition (understanding complex theories), metacognition (sharing of self-reflection on learning the dissertation processes), and critical learning (evaluating and synthesizing information we each had) to take place as we worked together to research, design and create the shared space. This structure allowed us to share resources, such as tools for research and writing, collect theories we can draw from, discuss relevant models in leadership, aggregate conferences and publishing opportunities to support each other and define the collaborative knowledge base tools that might be most helpful. Recognizing the challenges and complexity of writing a dissertation, we designed a digital environment where each member could access all the above information and tools, add to the learning environment, share further insights overtime on an open-source platform and offer a community of support.

Learning happens in context, activity, and with tools, and engaging in this project connects the theoretical knowledge of learning theory and collaboration in situ amongst peers.
