I use creative arts; poetry, pose, art, sculpture with historical reference to guide our students understanding and challenge perspectives around health, illness and suffering. We work collaboratively with artists, patients, local communities, the military and clinical health environments. Themes of the module include; women's health, palliative and end of life care, spirituality, military health, cancer, pain, culture and racism and historical nursing leaders. We aim to build student nurses wellbeing through creative practice but also show them how they can use these methods with their patients.
We have a summative art exhibition which is the first of its kind with student nurses. You can see our latest exhibitions here: 2022/23: https://www.artsandcultureexeter.co.uk/online-exhibitions/exhibition-the-art-and-history-of-nursing and 2023/24: https://www.artsandcultureexeter.co.uk/online-exhibitions/inspiring-new-perspectives-a-cross-disciplinary-exhibition-of-the-art-and
We also have a research project developed following the module and you can read more about this here: https://www.creativetoolkit.online/
Students said: "Creativity can impact observational skills and emotional intelligence” and the module made them "think from the patient’s perspective”. Another student said "“Because of the topic I chose for my creative piece, I am now much more aware of the health inequalities in the UK and hence as a nurse I will have them always present and will try to do something about them”. Community members who attended our latest exhibition said using creative methods "enables better communication and also gives nursing staff a way of expressing their emotions around what they see at work” and “Creativity and art can convey meaning and challenge concepts and prejudice. It can be a therapy activity both for the creator and the observer with large benefits for patients as a therapeutic activity but also as a wellness activity to safeguard the mental health of healthcare students and staff”
Helping artists do their best creative health work through thoughtful programme design, peer-based learning and creative research and evaluation.
I work with artists, community organisations and health care systems to use the arts for public health impact. I take a participatory approach, using peer-based learning, reflective practices and coproduction to support programme design, evaluation and research. Working with Arts & Health South West, Arts Council England, The Culture Health and Wellbeing Alliance, and others, my recent projects include supporting the wellbeing of young people through creative activities; wellbeing support for artists who work with complex needs; and professional development for artists in creative health. I also work to improve access to health care for culturally diverse communities, including delivering culturally responsive care and reducing language barriers.

Embedding a Culture and Heritage Capital Approach.
DCMS December 2024
Embedding a Culture and Heritage Capital Approach presents a baseline description of stocks and the flow of services and benefits.8 While the framework can be used to help articulate the impact of culture and heritage interventions, it is still very much in development and will evolve through consultation with the sector and academia. This publication also summarises the growing evidence base of CHC research outputs that can be used within appraisal and evaluation, and our long-term ambition of establishing a set of Culture and Heritage Capital Accounts.
