What are "heart" words?
"Heart words" are words that children learn to read and spell by heart because they don’t follow typical phonetic rules. We also call these "trick" words in our classroom. Also, often referred to as "sight words" or "high-frequency words," these are common words that appear frequently in reading but are tricky to decode phonetically. Traditional phonics rules may not fully apply to these words, so they need to be memorized for fluency.
Some examples of heart words are:
- Said
- Was
- They
- One
- Could
For teaching purposes, "heart words" help children recognize these words quickly, aiding their reading fluency and comprehension.
Ways to Practice at Home:
1. Make flashcards with heart words on them.
2. Each night, help you child read all heart words from previous weeks, as well as the current week.
3. Have your child trace each new heart word with his or her finger and spell it aloud.
4. Cover up the heart words and have your child write it with his or her finger on the table while naming each letter.
